He's been harping on about Africa for 20 years, raising money and throwing it at the continent really hasn't made much of a difference. Many of the countries are enduring civil war, others are waring with neighbours and the people in power are creaming off the cash.

The root of the problems in Africa need a damn sight more than just cash.

Yes he is asking for debt to be cancelled - who do you think pays the bill for that cancellation?

To take my analogy again, Bob is jumping around saying we need more petrol, we need to reduce the cost of petrol rather than getting to the root of the problem and asking for people to help plug the hole in the tank.

So is what he is doing actually helpful? Is it helping the people that are starving, or by focusing on something that will not affect them is he actually making the situation worse, is he detracting from the things that may help?

Personally I think he is making it worse. By cancelling the debt, the tin pot regimes have a clean sheet to go out and get more loans to line thier pockets. It is not going to help the poor and the hungry.

 

From reading the BBC article it says the only black artist was Mariah Carey,
I thought she was white? Or is she like Michael Jackson?

I never said that cancellation of debt was the way foward, but its one source of the leak, we pump money into these countries, but a good deal of it goes straight back into paying off the debts....with interest no doubt. Part of the problem -as you say- is that we've been very bad bankers (no pun intended) and let these countries get in so far above their heads without the means to allow them to self sustain their economies and turn things around for themeselves. Another important dimension of the problem is the nature of trading laws and regulations, that's to say nothing of corruption and hideous inefficency on the part of the 3rd world governments.

Throwing money at them isn't enough. Solutions need to address:

-Debt
-Trade
-Corruption
-Inefficiency in distribution of aid.

Its easy to knock Bob, but this country is hopeless in its apathy to its own people, let alone other less fortunate countries. As I said, at least he's using his celebrity status to try and do some good. I'm sure he's not got it all right, but remember: before it's worth steering a ship anywhere you have to get people on the deck.
