Default [rock music] Heads Up - Classic Albums - Metallica

On the Biography channel tonight (Saturday) at 10pm, Classic Albums features Metallica's Black album.

I personally think this was the last decent album the band made, everything else that has followed it has been poor.

Yeah got that on DVD - it's not as good as you expect...far too short

Do you think Metallica's musical decline had anything to do with James Hetfield having his hair cut

A classic track that one. Where is your local then, my cousin lives in Wombourne? The Civic? The one up the road from Wetherspoons that I have forgotten the name of?

A few times in the past I have jumped on a train to wolvo and gone out around the pubs and had some good nights.

p.s. Sanitarium and One are two of my fave's. Seen Metallica play in the NEC and Monsters of Rock, awesome esp. at the NEC, front row standing.

Sorry mate but I think you might be out of luck. My TV guide lists Sky and NTL only for this channel...but for other channels Telewest gets listed too

I will have to disagree, I think the 'Black' album was the start of there decline, although it may have been one of there most popular albums, it was to commercialized, people who didn't really like metallica suddenly thought they were great and soon everyone jumped on.

All there best songs were on the previous albums IMO, particularly when Cliff Burton was around, think of 'Anesthesia/pulling teeth' probably one of the best Metal bass solo's ever, on the 'Kill 'em all' album.

If you look at songs like 'Orion' 'To Live Is To Die' 'Fade To Black' nothing on the 'Black' album really measures up. More heavier tracks like 'The Four Horsemen' 'Seek & Destroy' 'Creeping Death' 'Leper Messiah' again there is nothing that really matches up to these great tunes on the Black album.

Metallica essentially died soon after, that album fooked everything up for them, what happened after that, nothing!! It was the beginning of the end.

One last point, people who don't really know a good tune from a sh1te one always say, can you play 'Enter Sandman' or 'Nothing else matters' cause that all they feckin' know!!! *****.

Sonic, I think you and I don't really disagree. The Black album is commercial for sure although it still retains some of the earlier anger the band had. It was the last Metallica album from the band that was Metallica if you follow me. The Metallica since Black have been a shadow of their former selves akthough Lars Ulrich is still an annoying **** so some things never change

Looking at the list of songs you mentioned, you left out a whole shed load of my favourite - For Whom The Bell Tools, Sanitarium, The Frayed Ends of Sanity...in fact almost all of their earlier work!

In fact, the last good song they made was right before they recorded their first demo. After that, commercial stuff only, so that is when their demise started.

The Black Album was the start of the slippery slope. Thats said and justice for all was not popular with my mates. Best Album is easily Master of Puppets.

Since the success fo the balck album they have turned into a bunch of girls and produce mediocre unimaginative music devoid of the anger, originality and passion that made them so good.

I'll stick with Slayer, Testament, My Dying Bride, Morbid Angel and Death for decent metal.

Have any of you heard open casket or pull the plug by Death ? Awesome !

Master of Puppets is deffo one of the very best metal albums ever, don't think there's sub-standard track on it at all. Kind of a pity really that although they've increased their worldwide popularity since then (way back in 1986 !) that their output has not matched up to that album.

Master Of Puppets is pure thrash!!!

Black is an all time classic, and as already said, never to be topped.

They've played it at 'Corrosion', which is a monthly metal night as part of Blast Off at the Civic. Other place in Wolves for Metal is The Planet, formerly The Venue. Bit Emo-ish for me when I've been though!

Wolves is a great night out for music whatever your taste
