Thumbs down Are you offended by the bible?

Seems some ethnic minorities may be offended by bibles in rooms/wards in hospitals so one health authority has decided to remove them even though no complaints had been made.

In fact Resham Singh Sandu, Sikh chairman of the Council of Faiths, said: "I don't think many ethnic minority patients would object to the Bible in a locker."

So just what is these peoples problem, just political correctness gone mad if you ask me.

Most consideration seems to be given to the 'opinions' of Muslims in issues like this. How ignorant must the health authority in question be, considering that the Old Testament is common to both religions and Jesus was regarded as a prophet?

I'm told that John Humphrys' interview with the spokewoman from the said hospital was a classic if its kind: she kept coming out with meaningless management BS and Humphrys kept asking her to translate it into English.

I thought the official reason was that since the bibles are read by loads of people they are an MSRA risk. So by the same reasoning the piles of grubby, threadbare 200 year old magazines should be removed also.

Oh god..here we go again.

First of all no one has complained about bibles in hospitals so try reading, gyfto, before you start ranting ****e.

The official reason is about the spread of MRSA. Somewhere along the line someone has 'tweaked' the story into PC gone mad crap.

You can't say "PC gone mad" any more. You have to say "PC gone mentally challenged".

The trouble with this ruling is that to keep everyone happy, they will need to provide religious books for every single religion available. If that happens then where will you be able to put all your **** mags when you are in hospital if all the space in the locker is taken up my the Koran etc?

last time i practiced it was rc & c of e & judaism

I agree with gsm1 here. In fact, some muslim (and other) groups have said quite the opposite in the past - due to the british people showing a generally co-operative attitude toward ethnic minorities and their beliefs, these extend the same attitude (with the exception of a few radicals - always the few who try to ruin everything for the many!!).
This really has nothing to do with religious intolerance, and everything to do with health issues. Its just a minority who choose to put a religious 'spin' on things for their own ends, whatever those may be.....
After all, a newly elected government HAS to be seen to do something about the problems in the NHS (but that's another story.... )

No, it's not PC gone mad!!!!!

FGS...try reading people. One pratt at the Torygraph has written a pile of sh*t prompted by a director at Gideons International who distribute bibles.

They haven't made any decision about bibles in that particular health authority - they've only been consulting about storage and possible spread of MRSA. That is all. There is no ban and there has been NO talk of a ban.

I think they should leave a porno for blokes and a copy of Heat magazine for ladies, no bugger reads it anyway, its all a load of fairytales about being a good person, if you cant do that without a manual then you are thick. Once we all get over the fact that all religion is b0llocks and colour/race doesnt matter the we all might get on a bit better.

I have many Moslem friends and I have in the past asked whether , Bibles , Christmas cards, Easter Cards etc etc have ever caused offence. The answer is of course not. I have never personally been driven to complain about the Koran. Why would I?

Halfwits seem to think that this kind of thing is helpful. Personally I wonder if the real intention of political correction is to cause maximum offence to as many normal people as is humanly possiible in an effort to keep the PC gravytrain flowing.

Answers on a postcard to.....

You've got it Tiggs - any chance at all, no matter how thinly veiled, and people immediately start to sound off about "foreigners" and how Britain should stand up for itself etc.

Wonder how some of the SN contributors would have got on in Kosovo?

Maybe there isn't one, but C of E has to be the closest.

If this is really the case (ie pandering to other ethnic groups etc), shouldn;t the US have everything in Spanish and English? (Just like Montreal with French and English).

Flippin' ridiculous. I have no issue with cultural diversity as it does make the country a better place most of the time, but I have a major issue with illegal immigrants and people who try to impose their beliefs on other people through whatever route they choose - and that includes the PC route. Unfortunately, we as a nation can be fairly spineless at times like this and allow the PC amongst us to win.

I'm British/English and proud to be, but appreciate that others have their own opinions and views. As long as they keep them to themselves, it's fine. It's like Joho Witnesses coming to your door. What makes them think I should wish to hear what they have to say... such is life today eh!

here here.......... I too agree religion is a load of bollocks and its just a way that insecure people try to come to terms with the inevitable......death.
Thats all it boils down to really.

All religions try to make out as if we go to 'another place' or 'are on a journey to become enlightend' or 'are reincarnated' (trying to make death a far more swallowable prospect!)
People are just too scared or dying and coming to the realisation that when we die then thats it......game over....ya worm food and you dont go floating off anywhere. Thats it. you no longer exist

If there was none of this religion crap the world would be alot nicer safer place, with no terrorism, wars etc.

Thats my take on things anyway

if ive offended anyone by my beleifes (i have non) then tuff titty!

Really? In the UK, the Church of "England" is the official church?? A lot of Scotland won't be agreeing with you on that.

The whole point it is we are a secular nation, or we are supposed to be, i.e. religion does not play a part in government. We don't have an offical religion, we have the freedom to choose the religion that you want to choose, if any.

If this is really the case (ie pandering to other ethnic groups etc), shouldn;t the US have everything in Spanish and English? (Just like Montreal with French and English).
I thought somebody had said this was an MRSA control measure??

Dangerous ground, plenty of legal British people that have non Christian beliefs, myself included.

I'm British/English and proud to be, but appreciate that others have their own opinions and views. As long as they keep them to themselves, it's fine.
Are you on religion or culture or ethnic background here - you seem to be freely interchanging between them. Culturally we need less keeping it to themselves and need to try and make more of an effort to integrate those that have immigrated to this country in the last few generations. Encourage them to become British rather than trying to create little enclaves within Britain that are like their country of original origin.

It's like Joho Witnesses coming to your door. What makes them think I should wish to hear what they have to say... such is life today eh!
Think you will find most of them in this country are white and have been in this country a number of generations.

Oh, I do love proving NewLabour lovers and PC people wrong! I suggest you listen to this:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/today/li...s_20050603.ram

i.e. the original words from the hospital in question.

After you've listened to it, then comment. It applies to religious material AND MRSA, but she (the person commenting) talks mostly about the "service equality panel".

Enjoy.

I don't have Real Player so I can't hear that .ram.

Talking 'mostly about the service equality panel' means sod all. Your point precisely is?

My point gsm1 is that you post confidently regarding this issue without first listening to the spokesperson from the hospital in question. I suggest you download Real Player or at least read relevant articles before suggesting to others that their facts are incorrect. Not wishing to wind anyone up. Just wish people would listen to the facts first.

I read the full story from the Telegraph (which the OP quoted from) and checked the BBC news site as well. Nowhere was anyone quoted as saying bibles were to be banned because they were offensive to anyone.

If you can provide a .wav or a FULL transcript of that interview I'll check it. I'm not going to install Real Player on my system.

As has been said often enough on this thread already, it was nothing to do with any kind of complaint by non Christian faiths who have stated that they had no objection to the Gideon bibles in hospitals, or anywhere else for that matter.

It was not sparked off by MRSA fears either, that was a hurriedly thought up excuse as a cover up. That was obvious from the interview where she was quoting the equality board before any comment over MRSA. Are they going to close hospital libraries?

It is yet another example of the total over reaction of the lentil eating, nut crunching, Roman sandal wearing idiots who inveigle themselves into these social engineering types of job for pretty good salaries and who for some reason only understood to themselves decide to bring out these controversial and incredibly stupid announcements. They must be on some kind of power trip or other. And of course the Koran should be available as well.

The trouble is, they seem to have a disproportionate influence on the authorities who really should know better than allow them to continue to drag this country down into the appalling abyss of eventual anarchy.

M111usy,

You are of course entitled not to believe in religion if you wish, but it really is not necessary to be so unpleasant about it and towards those who do.

J4CKO,

Sorry to see by what you said about requiring a bible to strengthen one's faith in hospital when you might be seriously ill, that you obviously need a bit of **** to be able to wake up your own libido!

Les

i cant believe this bullsh1t

not a single muslim complained and they even backed the church that its so stupid to ban it and the official reason they wanted to ban it was coz of the spread of the mrsa

and one paper decided to mix and add that it may offend some muslims which is b-o-l-l-c-k-s anyway

lol its the pc brigade having a rave time and coz the bibles gather dust and no one reads them they say it may spread mrsa

and get your facts right before u blame it on the muslims
