I'm from that neck of the woods. Parents still there.
Nice city in general but as with any place, there's bits that aren't so great. Old bits are nice although lots of tourists in the summer. top end of high street recently developed (bus station, shopping centre etc.) but nice to shop as high st is all pedestrianised.
If you into it (As I have been all my life), canterbury has one of the top hockey clubs in the country with great facilities incl tennis, cricket etc. Also has decent university, posh school (kings), cathedral etc.
Overall it's better than most other towns in the area (dover, ashford, folkestone, isle of thanet, herne bay, faversham, whitstable etc.) Overall, quite a middle class area with loads of nice villages all around (I grew up in one of them).
Anything more specific you need to know. I left the area 10 years ago but visit from time to time.

Also, in the summer it becomes crammed from corner to corner with european tourists but that goes with the turf given it's easy location to the ports and eurotunnel.
Theres a good town centre, loads of bars and restaurants, and public transport is generally pretty good.
Overall, you could do a lot worse
