I did a drive off a couple of weeks ago - filled the car on the way to see a client, busy thinking about his case, got in, drove away. Got home about three hours later, went to put petrol receipt in big pile of receipts to be sorted sometime, couldn't find it, realised I hadn't paid. Went back to the garage and said - (sheepishly) "erm - I got £50 of petrol about three hours ago and I forgot to pay" - They said - "really?? - we didn't notice" - damn

I did it once, had to leave my Swiss Army watch (£3 from Hong Kong) behind as security

The trouble with being honest is you feel a right tw@t when you do something like that. Sometimes I wish I didn't have a conscience

Did this exact thing on the way home from a late shift at work a few months back (12:30am - not really with it - you know the score!).

Being the dopey idiot that I am when asked if I had any ID on me I fished around in my pockets and pulled out a stanley knife (Work evenings at B&Q for my sins...) I'm not sure who looked more shocked - the till attendant or me. Was a tad relieved when she burst out laughing

Anyway, filled out a form saying i'd be back within 3 days to pay and that was that. All they needed was a registration number.

Kelvin.

I came back from France a while back and limped out of Dover with no petrol. Pulled into the first station I saw and filled up.
Due to some unexpected payments from my account while I had been away, My card was refused and I didnt have any other way to pay. Couldnt even get money out of an ATM as I was skint.

If I had a lower moral standard, I would have just driven off as the car wasnt registered to me then, so I would have been untraceable.
Instead, I went in and confessed. They asked me to leave something as security untill I returned with payment. I pointed out I lived at exactly the opposite end of the country. They took me details and let me go though, and I sent the money by special delivery when I got home.
Very embarrasing.

I had the same thing at a Total station a few months back. They asked me for ID, but it was all in my wallet!! They even had a special pad of forms to fill in, so i don't think we're alone in being wallies!!

I've done it.

Not too far from home so rang my wife to bring my wallet which was in my other jacket.

Felt a right plonker

Cheers

Did you have to fill up again further on in your journey if you were goin other end of the country ? cos you would still be out of money and also petrol

Maybe I should admit to having done the same thing....just to make you feel better

Washed my old car, when I finished it looked so nice, it was really begging for me to take it for a blast. So I did, then I was low on fuel, filled up, and relised that I had no phone, no wallet, no cards, cash or ID on me. And I was dressed in shorts and an old scummy T-shirt. Was also unshaven

The face of the attendant as I tried to work my charm on her, priceless. For everything else, there really is Mastercard

When the card was refused, i had £30 in cash on me. I had the presence of mind (surprisingly) to NOT hand this over for payment as I would need it to get the rest of the way home.

I often tremble at the thought of this happening and have been known to prove the existence of my wallet at least four times before filling up. And then I treble check it's not DERV I'm using.

I have heard of some people being asked to leave their spare wheel as security in lieu of payment. Doesn't bother me, I keep two in the boot (space saver and real one).

The mitt-print's a funny though; can't see that as being admissible evidence, more of a frightener.

K.

Done it once years ago left name and address and got a letter

The thump print is a new thing here
USA been doing it for a few years I was cashing a Travelers cheque in a Las Vegas Casino and got asked to put my thump print on a small sticky paper added to the cheque on the back
