If computer chips smoke is it bad?
I know this is PC but i think it may be general enough forn non scoobs wider audience.............
I chipped my x box tonight....but put the chip on its little pin things backwards...this caused it to get VERY hot and smoke a little (only a tiny bit of smoke)
Sorted that out and now find the chip doesnt seem to work...its little LEDs come on but it wont boot up the box..............perhaps a daft question but.........
could it be the heat/smoke commbo has killed my chip?

Errr, when you see smoke from a chip its all over I'm afraid.
Chips are sensitive to heat, and if they have smoked they are definately KIA. There is no way to fix a burnt chip, you will need a replacement. I've no XBox experience so cannot help with that bit.
The next bit of not so good news ....is that when a chip goes, it often takes out the components that are next to it. It is possible to put a good new chip into your XBox, and because of the previous damage, the new chip gets broken too.
I have told you that just in case you feel like borrowing a friends chip......
If it were a PC, and the CPU had burnt out, I would risk trying a new CPU in the mobo if it was a cheap one. If not, I would expect to change both the CPU and mobo. Possibly/probably the memory, and maybe other components like the graphics card as well.
Sorry to have said all of the above, it is not what you wanted to hear. Have a chat to others to find other poeple that have done the same thing. Then see what they had to do to fix it.

Said on the data sheets a regulated 5volt supply......worked fine on 12volts

My husband's BBC micro started smoking the other day after he spent too much time playing elite with it sat on the carpet no way for heat to escape = smoke.
He opened it up took out the sideways ROM board and now it works.
Obscure, but proof that smoke can escape and things can still work

I've smoked a couple of chips and still had them continue to work too (only simple things like op-amps, admittedly).
Common way of smoking a chip is to connect it in back to front - which often means the supply voltage is reversed or applied over the wrong pins. In that case, it may will fry the chip, but often (by no means always) just put out spurious 5V signals and not terminally damage over chips nearby
Another common way of smoking a chip is to put it in a Rizla, and set fire to the end.

Not so....
i accidentaly in front of some customers, applied 12volts with the wrong polarity through a controller module, the sillyscope went off the scale, and the module had smoke comming out of it, and that loverly burnt smell..
dont wory replied the customer, we have our people doing it all the time (its a third part module we supply one half someone else the other),, youve blown ic7, your part will only work in certain applications... so we duly tested our module which worked perfectly!! on examination the ic7 was holed, and should not have worked our component... so our customer is off to beat up the module supplier...
so things do work.... unlike tantalum beads!!!!
now they do smoke!!!!!!!
Mart
PS Tiggs beaching copyprotection eh... CRIM !!!! we gunna report you to the feds!!!

Tiggs, which chip did you buy? If everything is as it should be and you are not getting the flash bios screen then it sounds like the chip may be damaged. Where did you buy it from? bladbouncer? Mrmodchips? They are normally very good with help.
