Unhappy Crappy Dog situation

We have had to resign to rehoming one of the dogs

Kobe (left) has been picked on in a very big way over the last couple of weeks. (and if the truth be known he has been pushed out of "the pack" for some time now)
There is a huge Alph Male battle going on and Oz (middle) seems to be winning
Chyna (right) is Top Dog and as such just joins in with whom ever she feels will win...Oz.
So far the wife has been bitten twice as she doesnt go in to seperate them with enough gusto (and the fact she gets her hands in the mix doesnt help ) It takes me all my strength to get them apart. Tonight it took 2 kicks to one and 3! yes 3 punches to the ribs to wind the other enough to get them apart)
There is constantly blood spilt on all sides and Kobe is now just a nervous, shaking wreck.
He suffered from Meningitus when younger and has been.....a bit dim since and quite flighty and this is not helping him in the slightest.
As much as I would prefer to get rid of the one that causes the trouble I have decided to rehome the one who is the problem....Kobe
He will make a fantastic dog on his own and we hopefully have 2 possible homes for him...we will see.
Even if you are not interested, I will keep you up to date.

Sad situation mate, sympathise, you shouldnt have trouble homing a boxer (2 choices already), can always go and see him.

My kids get a bit like this, the three stooges !

We dropped him off at my folks house tonight for a couple of days and he was a different dog with in mins !!
Playing with his toys (that is when he is happiest, give him a ball and he is made up ! ) and running round the house without looking over his shoulder every 5 secs.

So you got 2 dogs and one bitch of the same breed, around the same age? isn't this asking for trouble?

I used ot own 2 male ridgebacks and I was always warrned to NEVER bring a bitch into the equation as it would cause massive problems.

Chyna (bitch ) is 5
Kobe is 3
Oz is 1
All was well until Oz matured a bit. The age gap is about right it is just that Kobe is a very weak minded dog and seems to lack intelligence and confidence. The other dogs sense this and just bully him. Just an unfortunate clash of personalities rather than the ages.
Chyna is an ex show dog Kobe was bought with the intentions of showing him but he didnt grow well. Oz's knackers didnt drop so his show/stud career was over before it started.
I have suggested rehoming Oz too (not met with much enthusiasm (sp) ) and going for another bitch, perhaps a nice import as UK Boxers are getting a bit big now-a-days.

Did one of Oz's testies drop? if so have it removed, that will chill the little bugger out and maybe restore some confidence into the older dog. Do not give up, seek professional advice.

Both have had the chop mate.
I dont want to have to go this route however due to the physical abuse that Kobe is taking it wouldnt be fair to keep him in an situation where it could continue.
We took Chyna as a rehome (@1yr) so we know how well a dog can adjust.

hard luck with this. Upsetting to have to lose a dog through something like this. You'll need to watch out for the young'un attacking other dogs outside now if he's feeling his oats.
I'll bring my ozzie across to put the fear of death up him if you like

so sad pg i have 2 boxers who both have problems in their own ways.. the bitch who is the spit of yours on the right hates other dogs (protective im sure) but loves all other humans and dogs who dont pose a threat (yorkies included) and our big male lubo(my name sake) who tries 2 be macho but despite his size is terrified of all things. Maybe we could meet up (god help us) and let them sort it out! I have thought of getting rid of my dogs too because I feel out of control with them all together but the pack bond is too great to separate them........maybe outside help is called for, we have done this with amazing results

Dunno how to help the problem but holding your hand over the dog's nose seems to help in getting it to let go of their victim! Obviously you try this at your own risk though I'd like to see you type a reply with no fingers!

I felt really sad when i saw your thread - even more so when i saw the picture. We have a 9yr old boxer called Ben... he is irreplacable.. I would offer to have Kobe in a heartbeat but fear my boy would become too jealous ( he already is a green eyed monster over the cat!!!).

I'm sorry to hear that you feel the need to split your brood.. dependent on your attachment, have you thought of a dog psychologist for the 3 of them?

I hope, if you go ahead with the rehoming, you find someone who give's Kobe the environment he needs to be happy again..keep us updated?

He may look gorgeous there but he can be a little buggar... had to bribe him with a selection from the celebrations box to get him to pose..

I really wish i could offer to rehome Kobe. I'm really upset thinking about it. I know it's not fair that he is being picked on by the others and that you are thinking of the dogs best interests which is great, but there must be some way around it..there are definately animal behaviourist whcih may help - speak to your vet. Please reconsider PG - you'll regret it when he's gone..

I am very attached to him as is the wife but I am also a realist.
I try to stop it before it starts (usually starys with Oz staring him out but sometimes it just kicks off instantly.
We could get a dog shrink in but is it worth risking the wife getting bitten again ? I was on a nightshift when she called me the first time crying...not nice ! I am about to build a large kennel / run affair and could keep them seperated that way and also have them in seperate rooms in the house but that isnt what dog ownership is about. The dogs are there to fit in with your life not to have your life dictated by thier behaviour.
I would love to keep him but it is not fair on the poor soul. To have him cowering behind my legs and hearing the kitchen cupboard dor rattle with him shaking against it 'cos Oz is in the same room is just not fair on the dog.
Anyhoo, off to work. I should hear today re. one of the potential homes but for some reason SN has now been blocked by the Brigades IT monkeys so I will have to let you know when I get home.
Lubo, No PM here. You are crap eh ! YHPM

PG, sorry to hear of your situation mate. 3 gorgeous dogs and its a shame they cant get along. Like you said, now Oz has matured he'll be battling for top dog in the house for the bitches attention. such a shame. I would love to take Kobe in, unfortunately I think he'll be too energetic for our bulldog... (who incidently is looking for another dog as a playmate. when hes not being walked in the field looking for other dogs he sulks. hes only happy around other dogs.... Dunno if we can manage with 2 dogs though.. 1 is hard work enough

Fingers crossed you can find a kind and friendly home for him. It sounds like a really hard decision to have to make but I can understand why you've had to make it. I've witnessed my dog in a proper fight and it's really quite horrible. I couldn't go through it on a daily basis.

Good luck!

I sympathise with you..

Had a similar situation with our 3 dogs and had to rehome one. Dog 3 started to assert itself over D2.

It was crazy -they were best of friends fopr 3years - slept and played together then one day they instantly became arch enemies. We tried dog psychologists etc but they gave up. Basically once they start to fight in a big way it is v difficult to break the barriers down again.

We have tried reintroducing them 3 and 6 months later but so far they both still go mad even when the can sense the other one is in the same house.
V upsetting but one would have ended up killing the other any other way.

Have you tried fitting an electronic collar to the dog who is starting the attack. I have one which I'm using to eliminate a problem with my dog, which gives him a mild electric shock when any undesirable behaviour starts. You zap him with the remote control which produces the shock in conjunction with an alarm type sound as soon as he starts fighting. They immediately stop and over time you can just push the button which activates the alarm, rather than zapping him so that he associates the sound with the bad behaviour. The bad behaviour stops fairly quickly.

Badly explained but it's Friday and I'm knackered.

Does that work with serial kid/oap-mugging when off the lead sort of dogs?

Don't see why not. My Ridgeback has a tendency to jump up at strangers in a playful way but unfortunately all the stranger sees is 50kg of lump coming at them and inevitably go all defensive which just makes him more happy to see them. The collar is starting to sort him out. Definitely cured his other problem.

You would need a 3 Phase supply to get Oz to stop !!

Potential home came up today. 3 were in the picture lastnight but after discussions with their partners they decided against it
The home is in Perth (Where I am stationed and 16 miles from home) with a nice family but the sticking point may be the toddler they have ...and the small case of the cat they have too. I just dont know how he will react with them although he has been very well socialised. We have them coming to visit tomorrow and then I will vet their home. We will see how that all pans out and if that doesnt go to plan then a certain Mr Scoob99 may be making a long journey (sorry for not giving you first shout Colin just thought the distance may have been a factor)
The wife is in tears next to me right now reading all the posts
All a bit sad perhaps but he is more a part of the family than just a pet.

Cheers all,

Paul

I'm little-ginge's sister and reading this, I am very upset. I live in a flat, otherwise i would take him on.

I will say that if I ever get a house of my own, I could not think of ever having different breed of dog other than a boxer.

Very best of luck and hope Kobe finds a happy home.
