Question Contact lenses - any experts online?

This afternoon I went for a contact lens fitting. It's the first time I've worn them in about 5 years, and technology has moved on to the point where despite my astigmatism, I have a choice. I can have either:

- daily disposable lenses, which work out at about £1.60 a pair, or
- monthly replaceable lenses, which are £20 a month including chemicals.

Does anyone know what's so different and special about the monthly lenses which makes them so much more than the daily throw-away type? What is it that makes them last longer than the dailies - or, alternatively, what is it about the daily 'disposable' lenses that makes them unsuitable for cleaning, sterilisation and re-use?

I remember seeing a picture of you ages ago on here, TBH, your money would be better spent on a decent haircut and some stylish clothes. Dont try and walk before you can run

Monthlies are more robust - most dailies wouldn't survive constant cleaning.

Dailies are hastle-free.

Most people swear by monthly day-and-nights: in theory you put them in at the beginning of the month and remove them at the end; no cleaning involved.

I've tried all the above and ended up with dailies.

Hello

The Daily disposables are convenient and, when you don't feel like wearing them, you don't have to. I buy one months supply and it tends to last me three months or longer.

The daily torics (astigmatism) are extremely expensive though (twice as much as normal daily lenses).

Monthlies are so much more? How so? According to your figures the daily ones work out at about £48 per month!

I've got monthlies BTW. Apart from the fact that the daily disposables don't need washing, they are supposed to be more hygenic if you can't be bothered to wash normal ones properly. So if you are kind of person who doesn't wash their hands after going to the toilet, daily disposables are for you!

Had gas permeable for about 10 years and then stopped wearing them so much when I got new glasses. They are a pain now as I have to build up the tolerance to wearing them throughout the week if I want to wear them on a Sat night. I've got daily disposable ones that I wear when I feel like it, so as boxt said, one months supply can last quite a while. The plus side is that if I lose one or get something in my eye (much rarer than when wearing the gas permie) it doesn't matter!
There is a guy on here that does very reasonable prices for lenses too

I wear monthlies. I bought a 6 month supply a year last noveember, and I still have 1 pair left. All this monthly or daily business is bollocks IMO, if they are good enough for a month, they are good enough for 4 . just make sure you soak em in fresh saline every night, keep the case spotless, and clean morning and night with a few drops of LC45.

Disclaimer:

Any cases of Glaucoma/cateracts/blindness at your own risk

forgot to say, 6 month supply with solutions was £90.

I can agree with that....I never chucked a bottle of solution out after 28 days and never had a problem either......I'll be cheeky and use the disclaimer above

Thumbs up

I have fallen asleep in my lenses loads of times when p1ssed, not nice, one morning I went into work after having to tear the lenses off my eyeballs after sleeping in them, they had been in about 24hrs. One of the guys at work had a bit of an eye infection ( not sure what exactly ), so he suggested I try some of his cream that was in the van, he also had a coldsore .

I went out to the van with my eyes like like a Jap sniper as the sun was making them hurt, when I got to the van I found the cream, but kind of got the eye cream mixed up with the tube of Blisteze for his coldsore. Bottom eyelids pulled down, I put a big squirt of Blisteze in each eye and rubed it in.

Anyway, a trip to the eye hospital later, and 4 days off work with Stevie wonder strength sunglasses on I was ok again

Also, when p1ssed, never mix up your saline with your de-clagging solution, 5% Hydrogen Peroxide straight into the blinker stings a touch

how much , are they made of gold ?? that is way too much , i've had dailys for 2 years and they are ok but tend to dry your eyes up if you wear them too long as for price they shouldn't cost more than a quid a day !! try specsavers they were about £24 a month

I also debating this a well, when I play footie I can't wear glasses and I can't see the ball without them.

The daily lenses make more sense to me.

Hello

As I mentioned, they are probably Torics, which are thicker lenses and are expensive.

If you wear the things less than five days a week I'd certainly agree dailies. Just avoid a contact-lens-by-post scheme and buy them as you need them.

PMSL Chip!!!

I've nodded off for a few minutes with my lenses in, but never all night. There must be a way off removing them without all the pain. Maybe dripping saline in the eye a few times and blinking a lot until they re-hydrate? I have put a lens in without rinsing off the hydrogen peroxide, you've never seen someone take out a lens so quickly!!!

I'm told by a colleague that this does work, but you need to wait at least ten minutes, with someone else applying the stuff fairly liberally while you lie with your head back.

Make you you tell your partner that you've taken them out if you go to bed pished. A Pal went to bed pished without telling his wife and we found her trying to take out his contact lenses when they were already out

I'm getting fitted for monthlies this week having already tried the daily ones. My Optician said that for my astigmatism the monthlies would give me better vision but are more of a pita to look after because of all the cleaning. However I only need them when I'm out in the forests so a month's supply will probably last 3 months or longer. I was surprised that they didn't hurt when I tried them for the first time, I must be really lucky.

I have been using Night & Day lenses for about 3 years now. I put them in and leave them in for about a month (maybe 6 weeks if I forget).
I never feel them, they dont stick to your eyes at night, but they do slow down a little. In that regard they are completely different to the standard water based lenses, which did stick solid to my eyes if I ever fell asleep in them.

The night & day ones are quite a low water content and more rigid than you would expect, they use a newish Silicone Hydrogel technology which allow about 6x the amount of oxygen through to the eye than traditional soft lenses.

They were a godsend for me because I seem to be either slightly or very intellerant to every contact lens solution available (and I have tried a vast number) in the previous 17 years of using contact lenses

I have the monthly disposables - but not the ones you leave in overnight. I do find that after 6 weeks they get a lot more uncomfortable. Always wondered about the daily ones - when you go on hols do you have to take 14 pairs with you? Do they take up much space?

I work away from home a lot and just leave a bottle of solution in my case - always imagined daily disposables had more of a 'shelf life'

I use daily disposables, tried gas permiable and monthly ones. Much prefer the daily ones due to ease of use.

They cost me £67 for 3 months worth.

I wear contacts every day and opted for dailies. It's commonly thought of as the healthiest way, you can't beat putting a brand new pair in every day.

Used to wear two-weekly disposables - got told I should change to dailies by my optician after I'd had a scratched cornea. The dailies are much more comfortable and much more convenient. And 14 pairs of lenses will take up less space than a lens case and the bottles of stuff do! Shelf life? The batch of lenses I'm using at the moment have an eat by date of January 2010...

i like shytot have the night and day monthlies, where you never take them out. (not gas permeable!!)

having worn lenses for over 15 years and spent most of the time clubbing in them, falling asleep and wearing for days on end, i decided to try these new ones. i have never got on with dailies at all.

I also have astigmatism and also require a toric lens.

although at first apprehensive, i now wear them all the time, never take them out and consider myself a night owl, sometimes awake for over 18 hours a day. i never once look back at the old style dailies.

my optician reckons you can wear them for betwen 4 and 6 weeks, however on the odd time i kept them in for 6 weeks, i did seem to pick up mild pink eye. i now stick to 4 weeks religiously.

i have now thrown away my glasses and dont wear anything but the lenses.

£25 per pair, no solutions required.

PS i do regularly get my eyes re-checked just in case, however with over 12 months under my belt i would gladly recommend them to anyone.

pm me if you want the brand!!

Hi Andy,

I do a fair bit of sport and find the daily ones to be ok. I had both pop out in lashing rain once while running, and had to find my way back to the car which was 1 mile away. My prescription is -4.5 so not too good!

The dailies are much more hygenic in that you dont introduce chemicals or other nasties into your eyes from cleaning all the time. Would highly reccomend getting your prescription and then buying them from an online place. Much cheaper.

Ive done the sodium hydroxide thing Ouch.

Also find I cant wear my lenses as much as when I was younger - but carry a little thing of saline in my wallet which helps.

After reading this thread, I've been interested in getting lenses again BUT, I can't find an optician offering either toric dailies or toric day & night.

Any recomendations in the SE/SW London areas?

i used to have monthlies but was told by my optician that there was not enuff oxygen getting to my eyes.. ( partially due i suspect to over wearing them). Apparently this can cause 'ghost veins' to develop which if left can make you go blind!!!

I changed to dailies which are thinner than monthlies so more oxygen getsm to my goggles. It is a damn sight easier to wear a pair and then flush them at the end of the day than faffing around with cleaning fluid and fizzy tablets!!

Apparently lots of people have allergic reactions to the fluid and it can take a while to find the one best suited... don't know how true this is though!

I fell asleep wearing them tho, and managed to break it in half whilst getting it out as it was a tad sticky... one trip to casualty and then on to a specialist eye unit later it was ok but having yuor eyeball scrapped with a hyperdermic needle is a bit stomach turning!!!
