The other half has just bought himself a guitar from the States. We knew we would have to pay import duty of around 2-3%, but VAT, we knew not. We got a letter from FedEx this morning, informing us, the guitar is at Standstead, and we have had to cough up over £100.00 in import duty and VAT to release it. Mad as hell.

Because he couldn't get the one he wanted here. I don't mind paying my dues, if I am aware of them.

Thats good that you cannot get it in the UK as the price with VAT is just a price ..... not cheaper than anywhere else and not more expensive.

Unfortunate to get caught though I suppose the shape and size alerted them?

to be fair 84, you *could* have looked into it a bit more, there is a thread a week on here about import duty. how much did it all cost, and if he could have got one here how much would he have paid?....maybe it didn't work out so bad after all?

Well as I always say, I live and learn. He was so chuffed to find the one he wanted Chip, I think it was a case of, buy now think later. Anyway, I feel better for the rant.

My brother bought a Cannondale mountain bike frame years ago, we declared it second hand and didnt have to pay import duty.

Import Duty and VAT you have to expect; its the FedEx 'administration charge' that really stings.
