Question Folding keyboards for PDAs/mobile phones?

Friend just asked, and I'm curious, so I'll ask here.

It would be nice to carry one of these around instead of a bloody great laptop, for when you want to write, say, up to 4 A4 pages of notes/report at a conference. Keypad not necessary.

Anyone any comments, experiences, limitations, recommendations?

Bluetooth, wireless, cradle - phone-specific vs battery life? Build quality? Generic vs brand name?

(Oh, and is bluetooth forbidden on planes at present?)

Thanks

Foldy-upy bluetooth ones for PDAs seem to be OK, but most of the stuff I do needs heavy formatting in templated documents. By the time you have pasted in to a proper version of word and re-formatted it all, you may as well have done it in proper word in the first place.

Bluetooth to a GRPS phone and access to the internet / e-mail is a different story! Mind you, we are supposed to be getting Blackberry soon.

may not be suitable but have seen a really cool one which projects a keyboard onto the desk and uses infared to recognice your keystrokes, very cool!!

That really is cool, isn't it?

Can't say I'm impressed with 2 hrs battery life though, not nearly enough for a whole day's conference - or the fact that you need a non-reflective surface (example - our meeting room at work has polished wood desktops).

Olly, we don't need much formatting, so I don't think that's a problem.

Any other comments?

I was using one of these in the lab today to type on an IPAQ 6340 via Bluetooth. It was really quick and responsive (not to mention completely cool gadget) - I'm a pretty fast typist and it managed to pick up all my mistakes really well. Even has silly software to make it sound like an old typewriter if you like that sort of thing

Well recommended - I've been working on mobile devices for years now (it's my job) and this is one of the coolest things I've seen. Far better than any of the foldy keyboards, which are pretty clever and well engineered bits of kit but nothing in comparison

Well impressed. More expensive than regular keyboards (obviously) but hey it's a toy...Scoobs cost more than Mondeos
