Default What is the point of an election manifesto?

I mean really? I know the main aim is to attract votes - but does anyone seriously believe what's in them? We get fed a load of bullsh1t for 12 months running upto an election - then everyone acts all surprised when the government (whoever gets in) spends their entire term backtracking and finding reasons for not meeting their promises.

I don't believe everything I get told in an advert - and in my eyes an election manifesto is little more than that - a bunch of pie in the sky promises about things that will never actually happen.

Is it any wonder so few people bother to vote?

To be broken and not adhered to in any way shape or form, i.e. as you say, no point.

As I have said in two other threads today, the only party that seams to be trying to tell the truth is the LIM DEM's however we will not get a chance to get them to prove this as they will not win the election...

I am not sure if "telling the truth" is the correct term. Most sincere in their belief that they will deliver what they claim, perhaps. The problem is they are claiming "We'll fix everything but it's going to cost you an absolute fortune". With that as a policy, one wonders why they bother.

They use spin and statistics to say they have fixed the problem anyhow. Waste of space the lot of them.

Whilst the other parties are claiming "We'll fix everything and it won't cost you anything" - before they hike up existing taxes and invent a few new ones to pay for it all.

Frankly I don't believe any of them - no one has a proven track record on truth....

don't believe the hype; they all lie. they all change policy once they have been elected. does anyone really speak for the people...i think not.

can we change this? In theory yes (votes?), in reality no because they change policy with the wind. politicians mostly seem to be concerned with themselves and carving out their own niche in history...good work

The election manifesto is a guideline to a partys policies. Not always adhered to,but considering elections are really only about different shades of the same colour,it "tries" to give you a pointer.

As for "truth" surely you judge people by their actions.Labour promised to put more emphasis on public services and by and large they have.Secondly their tax policies have swung more to helping the poor than it did under the Tories.

The Tories will get back in when people "feel" overall the economy will be better off with them in power. At the moment i dont think they do,hence another Labour victory.

Labour still arent Bad enough to lose, and the Tories still arent good enough to win.

What should they really say then DBW? I cant think of anything else they can produce apart from a manifesto of what they say they want to do.
