Question Mystery phone ringing

Have got a cordless phone downstairs and a "normal" phone upstairs. Recently the upstairs phone has been going off mainly in the early hours of the morning but sometimes in the day. It is only like half a ring, not enough to generate a missed call or a 1471 request. Once i was by the phone and managed to answer it straight away but there was no-one there.

Is it likely to be a phone fault or a line fault? Any ideas?

PS

www.tpsonline.org.uk - specifically:
It's auto diallers but if you go to this link, and call the number you can get it to stop. We had the same problem 6 months ago.

I've had this myself, seems to depends on the type of phone you use i.e. old ones seem the worse over new digitals. At first I thought it was Sky, you know uploading the info from the box, but since I got rid of sky it still happens occasionally.

Sureley auto dialers would generate a complete phone call with rings, not just the half a ring?

You may be correct - but it's worth a try

I don't think its autodiallers as with them you get a full ring and you can 1471 them and get "number witheld". Also it only "rings" on the one phone.

Ghosts in the machine?

Usually yes, but not always - for the sake of a 10 second phone call it's worth a try.

I'd also look at loose connections on the phone, handset and cable to the wall box. After that it's checking the wall box and cabling back to the BT main box (or try plugging the phoen in another socket, preferably the main box for a while and see what happens).

Only thing I can find on a quick google is http://wolfram.org/writing/howto/phone.html where he gets a half ring, but has a blocker against telemarketing on his phone.

I was told by once by a bt an engineer that having too many things plugged into the phone line can cause this, most bt sockets have a thing called a REN number of 4. One phone usually has a REN of 1 so this means that you can plug a max of 4 phones in your socket. Your sky box counts as a phone, modems etc do too. This isnt my problem though as I only have two phones and adsl and no sky.

Don't think it's tele-marketing or auto-diallers as it's only half a ring and it only rings one phone.

Pete

(have registered with tps anyway as get loads of these types of calls as well)
