Is there an alternative to PayPal?

Is there an alternative to PayPal?
We had to 'upgrade' the PayPal account last week to accept a credit card payment - and we're now being charged ~4% on every single cash receipt we get! On top of the Ebay listing fees, they're getting a total of ~7-8% on every transaction. Blimey.
This is massively expensive.
a) I can understand why, if people wish to inject cash into their paypal account, they should pay the 1.5% / 2% commission paypal is charged as a handling fee, but why should I have to pay the commission for the customers? And then double that???
b) why do I suddenly have to start paying for things that were free before I 'upgraded' the account.
Now it's done I can't undo it (and there's no point as I wouldn't be able to accept most receipts).
How does anyone get round this? Get people to do cash transfers or cheques only?
