Question Why do the lower classes still smoke?

Just seen a report and it shows that the lower classes are still taking up smoking as they always did ....... however, the middle/upper classes have ditched the weed.

Is it purely that the lower classes may lack a basic intelligence?

I'm NOT being rude to those who smoke - just confused why the message gets through to some and not others?

Is it that they tend to not appreciate the health implications, they maybe cannot take on board what they are told?

Puzzled?

A lot of it comes down to stress relief. As you are a master of self induced relief management I doubt you have to suffer from the same level of stress! LOL

Question

Or is it that they tend to be lower earners, so don't give a fek, as they know that New Labia will look after them no matter what they do

You'd be surprised at the number of highly intelligent (computer programmers) people I know who smoke. I also know a load of brass musicians (trombone, trumpet etc) who smoke. It's madness I tell you......

Doesn't seem to be limited to intelligence, but more to do with personality types in my experience...

I thought it was more women than men that still take up smoking - so that proves your theory.

Because they got sick of gambling on Premium Bonds (a relatively lower class thing to do, I think you'll find), so they thought they'd have more fun gambling with their life.....

And just what class do you think you fit into Pete ?

I smoked from the age of 12 ...... up until a health scare - I am NOT saying I am immune to the ridiculous state of affairs of being told it will KILL you and yet continue to do it!

I was just as those who continue smoking - it took a health issue with me to make me stop! So I am NOT above what I am saying!

But ..... I did stop ..... when I go to the Hospital I see people outside SMOKING!! WTF?? These people are coughing their guts up and STILL continue!

My question is, what makes someone realise its dangerous and pack up - yet, someone who is sufferring a health problem still smoke??? And it tends to be the lower classes that cannot adapt?

You don't meet many middle/upper class people in the pub during the week either, playing darts, drinking pints and eating pub meals.

Smoking is no longer hip for the intelligent man with a will.

I read a report about 3 years ago that the affluent male of 50 something had now stopped having heart problems - this was a marked improvement and it was put down to the fact that these men were now:-

1. Not smoking
2. Joined Gyms
3. Stopped drinking beer - wine was consumed in moderation

Just seen the report on the One O Clock news , asking regulars of a working mans club why they still smoked.
One guy, still smoking after 30 years said he hadn't tried giving up because the health risks were "over-blown".
LOL

I think my family fall into your so called "Lower Class" (or scum is nearer to what your probably thinking) bracket and none of us smoke. Oh and thank you for branding us all stupid with your "lack of basic intelligence" comment. Maybe smoking is a good thing for us "Lower Class" lot as it will kill us all off to leave a nicer more tasteful Britain for you nice people.

Blimey Mr Lewis,
Your 'not trying to be rude' is, dare I say it, like the Pope not trying to be catholic.
Despite your obvious lack of humility or community I would like you to demonstrate your 'SS' like talent for labelling people.
So here's a description of a, 'OH MY gOD', smoker that I'm close to

He works for a well respected international company.
His company sees it fit for him to represent them abroad.
He holds a managerial position.
He's a mechanical engineer but is also responsible for promoting UK industry and innovation.
As you can imagine he is adequately compensated for his efforts.
Don't forget 'HE'S A SMOKER'
He also drinks beer.

Label please.

There was a news report last week about a local hospital who plans to put up No Smoking signs inside and out. The funny bit was seeing the guy in a green gown with a drip still attached to his arm standing out the front having a ***.

I really think it is a bit much to start a thread about class distinction in these enlightened days and also to insinuate that so called lower classes suffer from reduced intelligence.

It goes a long way to demonstrate your superiority complex PSL and many may well consider that to be undeserved!

Its a culture thing, the middle class embrace the health thing wheras the lower classes prefer a more hedonistic but shorter life, get your pleasures where you can and then hack up some organs.

I live in a middle class area and nobody seems to smoke, they are all slim with the exception of me (and im not that fat), I did come from the mean streets of Newton Heath (North Manchester) and have ended up in leafy Cheshire, it is a bit of a Middle Class ghetto round here, a bit of good old working class cameraderie wouldnt go amiss, its all a bit f*ck you, go cycling and they dont weight up whether they can get around you, more whether going over you would damage the paint.

I dont smoke but I do think they are a persecuted breed, however if you are so stupid as to start nowadays then you deserve your fate, I worked in marketing for a few years which seemed to be almost exclusively staffed with female graduates with big trendy glasses that smoked Malboros all day, I think there was a collective "god I am so stressed and important that I need my ciggies" mentallity even though they were all middle class, and they all troffed a bottle of wine a night.
