Yes, there is a limit. It will depend on the handsets that you are using. I can't remember all the details, but, if you look on the back of a handset you should see a REM number, maybe 2. You can add the REM no.'s for all hadsets togeather and it should be less than 10(?) - check with BT for the max REM number. Broadband - I've no idea.

AFAIK each house as a "REN" value of 4 and each phone also has a REN number, if the total of all of the phone's REN's is greater than 4 the phone may not ring. I don't know if this effects the quality of the call.
Broadband is split using a microfilter to split the frequencies of the signal into voice and broadband, sometime whilst using broadband you can hear what sounds like interference coming through the phone but I don'ty know if this is due to multiple phones.

(REN = Ringer Emittance something or other)

REN Riner Equvelence No. Most phones have a REN of 1, a total of 4 REN per line is recommended by BT, although you can get away with more but when someone phones it may efect your ringtone.

Broadband does not efect your REN.

If you plugging in more than 3/4 phones, just turn off the ringers on the rest. You can plug in as many as you like as long as all the ringers are not switched on. That way your you are not exceeding REN 4.

Also believe that this doesn't apply to phones with their own power, e.g. cordless.

The maximum REN is 4 as others have said.
Most phones are rated to have a REN of 1, though in practice it may be lower than this as it used to cost more money to have it tested and certified for a smaller number. This is particularly true for phones with their own power as speedking says.

If you want more, you can buy a REN entender which plugs into the mains and lets you have more power for the ringers.

Not necesarrily true, as even tings like modems and digital communicators (for alarm systems) have a REN and these don't ring, they are also powered by an external source..
