I'd have thought having a 4*4 car makes no difference at all in the snow and ice. Especially sports cars with wide summer tyres.
I'd say a cheap hatchback with thin tyres is a better prospect in the snow than a scooby, certainly a lambo!

I used to ***** foot around on summer tyres in the snow where all you had to do was think about touching the brakes and you were sliding down the road, crapping yourself. Get yourself a set of winter tyres and really see what your 4x4 scooby or whatever 4x4 you have is like in the snow!!!!! you won't regret it trust me. I have 215/40/17s on my scooby and have no probs whatsoever.
Having a 4*4 offroader with the correct tyres is the best thing you can have in these conditions, pretty like the one I have on the drive. Haven't bothered with the hassle of shodding the P1 with winter tyres as there no snow and no ice on the roads I go on. I still say that having narrow tyres on a cheap hatch back is just as capable in the snow that an impreza and a lot less hassle when the bloke behind on summer tyres rear ends you

Lucky buggers!
Haven't had a 'proper' winter here for about 20 years. Had a few snow flurries over the past week but nothing settles.

Winter tyres are soft compound rubber and silicon mix tyres that work amazingly well on try/wet tarmac that is below 7degrees C, they also work remarkably well on fresh snow, not so fresh snow, compacted snow and to a certain extent ice.
Cars and ICE do not mix not even with winter tyres no matter how you look at it but summer tyres are **** on cold wet roads.
Lets even forget that snow exists shall we if that makes it easier for you to fathom the concept that just maybe the tyres you chose for your car are not the best in the world. Just maybe there were actually tyres invented to be used in the winter when it is cold and wet.
Wurzel is right, we have Winter tyres & Summer Tyres here.
Below 7C summer tyres loose effectiveness.
Winter Tyres can be used all winter, even in the dry, they are much more grippy in cold conditions.

:P etcWinter tyres truly are a revelation. Drive a car with 'em on once, and you'll be selling your grannie for a spare set of wheels with winter tyres on them

I fully intend to go for some for the (whisper) bmw.

Fathom this, I cannot remember ever driving in conditions of -7 in the UK. This coupled with the lack of any snow and roads which are so gritted you could build sandcastles by the side of the road, is a fairly good reason for me not to bother with swapping tyres about.
Not everyone is in the same boat as you tho mate... My scoob gets - or used to get - out of the estate I live on brilliantly, even on normal tyres. Slippy, but fun, and I got places that others can't reach
Having spun the car entering the estate at under 5mph on new year's day 2004 after a brilliant but uneventful drive back in the snow from north yorkshire, I was reminded that it's not infallible - and my 3 month old son was in the back, which *really really* focuses your mind.
No damage done as I spun it just turning in, but it worried my wife no end. I was going to buy cheap 16" alloys and bung snow tyres on it, but the budget never allowed and other priorities came up.
In a RWD, I will be buggered moving anywhere in snow, hence am now trying to find a cheap set of alloys for winter tyres, or snow chains - but chains and 255/35 R18s don't seem to mix!
Our country comes to a standstill at a dusting of snow because, despite the warnings, it catches people "by surprise". B&Q will once again be sold out of snow shovels, guaranteed.
Take a look at how Germany (or any country that gets snow semi-regularly) operates and it seems that most people do have two sets of wheels for at least one of the family's cars.
Go to Sweden and people run about on studded tyres for quite a few months of the year...
We are bloody useless in this country
, but every year is the same. And it's probably safe to say that I'll still be saying that I'm about to buy some snow tyres this time next year, when it all happens again
Gone off on one, haven't I? Sorry

+7!
Once below +7C your summer tyres become less effective.

I recall significant snow fall in 1978 on the Downs-My dog would dive into the drifts and disappear!
I live in Perth now 30c today , but miss the Downs
