Its pretty much any number calling through 'switchboards' within businesses plus 141 callers... Eg if I call my mobile from the office right now it says withheld...
Register with TPS to prevent cold calling and do what I do and bounce every single with held number off... BOING!!!

go to www.tpsonline.org.uk and on there you can call a number to get yourself "protected" from these auto dialer calls. We had the same problem a few months back, several calls per night. One call and it all went away very quickly.

In fact I'm feeling generous....

If you have been troubled by calls where the phone rings but on answering there is no one there, you may wish to register your number on the Silent Callgard Service on 0870 4443969.

These calls are generated by automatic dialling equipment which dial more numbers than there are operators available to take the calls.

Scooby In A Lake - refers to a picture of a Subaru in a lake that is regularly posted by a newbie thinking it has never been posted before, when it has, countless times. Basically it means we have seen it before, many times.

depending on your mobile you can set it up to only ring for numbers listed in your 'contacts' list.

Unhappy

rgv_stu,

i have had a few withheld then hang-up on my mobile this week, typically around lunchtime. Have had lots of spam calls over the years, but the hang-ups are a first - must be a new scammer starting up

Yep, TPS is very good. I never get any cold call now. But I still get the odd one from dodgy companies, mainly from the US, trying to sell me stock market recommendations.

I've also used TPS, and it's very effective. When I moved into my flat, I got a phone line connected and fairly soon started getting calls from the usual double-glazing, mortgage, etc. companies. Registered the number with TPS (and the address with MPS), and problem solved!

As for the 'withheld number' thing, it is possible to ask your operator to always withhold your number (landllines).
