Flamer kits
Ive been looking at these for a while now. With straight through exhaust on my 73 GT6, no baffles and well tuned the best it will do is pop and bang a lot.
Being a classic owner theres coils and ht leads, plugs etc hanging around. but what does the little control box do in these kits, ive connected a coil plug ht and batt together and no spark. this box does something.
any ideas?

It's not just a case of giving the coil 12v, you need to charge it for X amount of time and switch it off and create the spark, much the same as the points in your dizzy. (guessing you still have points!)
I've never messed with a flamer kit but I'd guess that's what the box of tricks does

just for a laugh on the mg i mounted a spark plug on the end of the exhaust as it always ran rich and it got a few flames going - only tried in the garage though.
what u need is another coil and plug lead and spark plug and 12v supply which will generate a spark when the field collapses, i.e. 12v in, nothing happens, turn power off and spark, etc. so you need a method of switching it on and off, i.e. a high speed relay or something off your dizzy.

Best if you forget about it mate. Wearing a big violet tit on your head would be a cheaper -if far less foolproof- method of making yourself look like a sorry wnaker.

You need something to switch the coil on and off to make the spark (spark is created by the charging and discharging of the coil)
A Relay driven by a Astable or 555 timer via a darlington driver should do it (about £5 for all the bits from maplin)
Alternatively- using old car bits An indicator flasher unit, not sure if it'll take the current...non-ballasted coil can pull over 12amps - so keep the ballast resistor

Should get a really good flame when the petrol tanks goes up cos its ancient and seeping a little.
Dont do it, you have risen above crap like that in owning a classic so dont sink back down !

Now don't get angry poor guy, just because someone tells it like it is with honesty. If you fit one of those Satan's Farting kits to your car you will look like one of the biggest arseholes on the planet, and beasting McDonald's car park is all you will be fit for.
Hope This Helps.

Yeah but who is sadder?
Someone who makes and fits a flamer kit themselves using some bits found in the garage and £5.52 (including petrol) in bits from motor factors/maplin
Or someone who pays £100, then pays a garage to fit it because they can't read instructions.
Both, Neither or ALi-B is not an option

No-one answering the question here, as ever..... Just the usual bout if **** taking
I've had a scooby for nearly 5 years now, and honestly thought a flamer kit was OTT, until I followed a car with one fitted. They are so funny, and great fun when you have a car following a few feet off your bumper. As soon as it switched on they seem to back off..... I am a 35 bloke with four daughters, and think people should be able to fit what the hell they want to their cars, without all the stupid remarks
I was wondering how to switch the coil on and off without paying stupid money for an entire kit. As it has been mention, the switching box can be made for around £6, So can some explain how this can be done please? A nice simple diagram would be good obviously listing the components required.
Thanks Phill
