Read the book years ago. Very hard going, as about 20% of it seems to dwell on Batemans' obsession with what other people are wearing (Gucci ties or whatever). Supposed to be an insight into the characters mind, but got a bit heavy after a while.

The book is a superb. Bateman's obsession with outward appearances while forgetting peoples names is a statement of how vacuous and shallow people are in the materialistic 80s.

The book is .... errr .... interesting. The film is crap.
My problem is I can't find any sympathy for Bateman, not because of his love of bestowing sick and twisted acts of violence upon his victims, more because he actually likes Phil Collins
tiggers.

Book = crap (whole chapters devoted to Whitney Houston, Phil Collins and Genesis etc)
Film = quality (apart from the ending which is rubbish)

The starved rat and 'habitrail' pipe bit is quite disturbing too.

No one could ever recognise eachother so even at the end where his lawyer said he'd had dinner with Paul Allen recently it's likely that it was actually someone else he thought was paul allen, after all the lawyer had just completely not recognised Bateman.
A lot of the book was missed out in the film...
Patrick Batemans brother is the main character in another Easton Ellis's famous books thats been made into a film, "The rules of attraction". In the book Patrick himself actually also features for a chapter...
