Probably do it myself, as to cost not really sure but basically "as much as it takes"

Best place for components and propper alarm systems (not B&Q tat) is here: www.gardinersecurity.co.uk (download the catalogues)
Speech dialler to phone you up when it goes off is a must....as a standard siren does absolutely nothing these days.
If you have deaf neighbours a Master Blaster in addition to the siren is reccomended which will almost certainly guarantee they'll call the police when it goes off (disturbance of the peace ).

I have based my system on x10 so runs through the mains cabling of the house and uses wireless to cover the garage and sheds and sounder ect, (and can also put a unit in the car if kept on the drive).
The visonic powermax plus, will also phone / page you when it is triggered, and you can remote disable / enable the alram and also listen through wireless microphones.
if you go compltely wireless it is expensive but you can take it with you if you move.
this is the system that bt resell for a monthly fee and they have a call centre, but they are very expensive. this takes a couple of hours to install, to keep it secure I do a walking zone test every few weeks to make sure all is well. If you install it yourself and are handy at diy you can maintain and test yourself probably better than having a contractor to do it for you.
My alarm system probably cost about £800 in total, the cheapest quote i got for the same equipment but with an alarm company installing and monitoring was £3200 and a monthly fee !!!.

Depending what the incident was depends on what you need! At my old house I hada Yale DIY burglar alarm system availiable from any good DIY warehouse. Had wireless movement sensors and door sensors, and a panic button could be added I believe. Was a piece of cake to fit, and rarely went off for no reason. 2 false alarms in 3 years I think.
So if it is a working deterrent you want I'd go for one of these. In fact must fit one at my new house.

I must add that i have a lot of sensors and x10 receiver units you could get the basic visonic setup for a couple of hundred. I did go a bit mad, I can open and close curtains with my mobile FFS .
But something I have done which is very usefull if the alarm is triggered outside lights turn on and so do some lights around the house by x10. Im still thinking about getting the barking dog module as well. You can also wire in smoke and flood detectors, very useful if you want alerting if your own house is on fire
Mine has never false alarmed, except when i shut a cat in the garage. but that is an intruder to some degree.

I went with British Gas.£699 for 3 PARS and a wired in smoke detector, wired or wireless you decide,a nd a modem control panel that phones upto 4 phones.
I haven't a cue whether its expensive or not,but it looks good and they just sub contract to a local sparks,so its easy to arrange

Without going into too much detail I basically “apprehended” a prowler / potential burglar earlier in the week.
For piece of mind for both my wife and I it is apparent I need an alarm system and quickly.

All you need is a motion sensor in the main rooms downstairs, kitchen, hall, living room and dining room covering all entrances.Anything else is a waste.
Ours was done by a bloke in Grimsby, excellent guy,no bull$hit and great job.Been doing it for years, cost just under £300.

Just look at all the people that have the 3 letter word alarms that didn't pay for the extra live bell box "suckers"
I know

This is what I have.
magnetic sensors on both doors downstairs.
IR motion sensors in kitchen, dining room, study, front room, den. upstairs landing. garage and shed.
weatherproof animal aware motion sensor (this does not set off alarm but changes some zoning details) and warbles if the alarm is set to home.
I have a dedicated phoneline for the alarm system ( i have 4 lines into the house). you can get mobile phone systems to use instead.

Fair point that if a burglar cuts the phone line it wont call me! But the call is really secondary as the initial result of an alarm is the neighbours all checking it out.
Got to help living somewhere like that......everyone in our close has alarms and about once a year one will go off......there will always be someone out in the close to check it out (lucky only false alarms so far)
I'll take good neighbours over the phone call anyday!

He shot off through the gardens, I just waited on the street a couple of houses up the road from us and gave him a “shock” when he appeared. It was quite bizarre, most surreal.
