Default Vasectomy.

OK, I've been thinking about this for some time but wading through the online information has left me a little confused so for those of you who have had it done I'd appreciated a few questions answered.

It seems as if its more difficult to have this minor operation done on the NHS, not only do they appear unwilling to do it but it seems as if I have to take my wife along to have a consultation with my doctor? Is this true? If so, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

There are a lot of differing views as to how painful the operation is and how long before you get to test your equipment out. Some have got back in the saddle straight away and others have been laid up for a while - any first hand experiences out there?

Obviously, most blokes will wince at the thought of anyone waving sharp instruments near their bits (well, it makes me shudder anyway) so I'm after some positive stories from blokes who have actually had the operartion.

Cool

I personally haven't had it, but I am also thinking of it, so would be interested to hear anyones views too.

The people I know who have had it said you feel like someone has kicked you in the family jewels for about a day, and then it ain't too bad. About 3 months is the timescale for officially 'shooting blanks' I believe

Ok .. did have it on the NHS, didn't need to take my wife with me to the doctors to make the appointment but did have to have a fair bit of discussion why we wanted it done. Only took about 5-6 weeks to organise at a local clinic.

Actual operation isn't bad, worst bit is the shab jab to freeze the area (twice) it's a bit on the old 'jesus' wince. After that not too painful, wear support underwear and take it easy ... they do go quite black and blue.

Back in the saddle probably about 1 1/2 - 2 weeks after op gently .. watch out for speed bumps when your missus is driving .... hair growing back is annoying and can be a bit sore and itchy.

I'm now about 1 year on and have no worries, no difference in anything to before op. It's not too bad all round really.

Avalyn.
Oh you get sample bottles through the post which you fill (with some help ) and send back for testing. One a month, 3 clear in a row and your OK, phone for results so no little session in a cubicle type affairs

i had it done last year,me and the missus had to see the doctor who asked about our reasons for wanting it done.i was on the waiting list for about 6 months.the op was done in day hospital under local anaestetic you feel a freezing sensation followed by a strange tugging/butterflies in your stomach sensation.the most stressful thing about the op was all the doctors and nurses fidling with your nuts.
the op seemed to go really well,so three days later i decided to try the old fella out.
THIS WAS A BIG BIG MISTAKE!it felt like some one had booted me in the bollox with steel toe cap boots.this set me back 3 months as i got a major bollock infection.
so for me the moral of this sad tale is dont start ******** to soon after the op take things very easy and you will be fine.
one year later and i look back and its well worth it and all the plumbing works as well as ever.
i hope this helps and doesnt put you off.

I had it done in November..

My GP referred me to the nhs, my wife went, as they council you both !!

although its the man having the op, you haveto be made aware of the bigger picture...

my consult with the hospital specialist was ok (6 month wait though)

a quick exam and i was advised to have a general, due to a hydracil on one ********..

the op was scheduled for 22 weeks later (nhs non priority) although it was quicker to have a general than a local!!!

the day of the op was fine , i turned up had a quick discussion with the anethatist? and the surgeon, he used the one cut method.. very quick and simple only one cut instead of 2 either side.

a quick shot with some squiffy drugs and that was it...

woke up, checked out the bits,, all ok,,, a bit sore but intact..

home a bour 1 hr later

no swelling, but they went black for a couple of days.. very tender for about 3 days, (dull ache) was back at work after the w/end.. walked liked john wayne for a day .. then ok...

didnt use if for about a week!!!! but all ok... try by
yourself in case it goes wrong!!!

Can't advise personally, but I've seen this after just speaking to a mate who had the op this morning. Had the op at 11 which took about 35min, and he's now back home (12.30). No problems at all at the moment, although it might be a bit different when the anisthetic (sp?) wears off totally.

As regards the discomfort during the op, he said it was no problem...no pain from the injections, or the actual op, just a slight discomfort when the ends were tied. Other than that nothing to worry about.

Obviously diferent people may have different experiences as with any operation. He's been told were supportive underwear (he's been given a type of jockstrap), and not loose fitting boxers, as they are more likely to cause discomfort.

Prior to today he did have to attend the clinic on a few occassions to discuss the matter, and his wife had to attend - really to make sure that it was something both parties were happy with.

Any specific questions, let me know and I'll ask him for you.

Gareth

This really irritates me. If women had to bring their husbands along to support their right to contraception, you can imagine the outrage this would cause.

Fair enough, but a vasectomy is a slightly more serious form of contraception than a pill or condom.

I'm fairly certain that if a woman wanted to be sterilized then her husband or partner would take part in the discission process.

Its not just a case not having to worry about preventing pregnancy, it's about deciding that you do not want any more children, whether with your current partner, or if you should separate in 6 years time, with a new partner, or (God forbid) anything happen to your current children.

After the 'clearance' (circa 3 months as above), you get (well I did, anyway) a certificate saying that you are ' in the clear'

Always struck me it was worth having in my back pocket just in case the right circumstances arose - but I'm not that sort of guy BTW

Worse part of the op was the surgeon and the nurses completely ignoring me and discussing their Christmas shopping....

I got mine done here http://www.mariestopes.org.uk/uk/vasectomy.htm and have just had the all clear (I'm now officially firring blanks).

The operation is done using a laser, heres a quick review of the op.

1. Drop pants and lie on operation table.

2. Doctor has a quick feel, re positions your back wheels and gets you to close your legs up.

3. Big injection into your sack to numb it.

4. He then laser's a half inch gash into your sack (nice smell of burning flesh. ie your chicken skin).

5. He then has a route around to find your tubes and pulls one of them out.

6. He then cuts your tube with the laser (again not a very nice smell).

7. He then repeats 5 & 6 on your other tube.

8. Thats it, job done.

9. Then back into the waiting room with all the other poor sods waiting to go in.

10. Quick cup of tea, a biscuit and then your booted out.

I found the whole operation quite painful (maybe just me though)

Hope this helps

Tony

Durex can burst .. my missus had a stroke during pregnancy so advised not to have another .. would you take that risk on a bit of latex?

Probably depends on what area of the country you're in as to how long before you get the Op.

Mines took around 4 weeks from referral from the Doctor to the actual Op and that was NHS.

Op wasn't painful, though getting the stitches out was as they didn't want to come out, which meant a lot of pulling on the nadgers.

Has anyone who has had it done got PVP, Post Vasectomy Pain?

The experts believe PVP is caused by a build up of pressure in the cut tubes and ********* because the fluid has no where to go.

Before you become a public health hazzard

You will have to wait three months before you're pronounced infertile and the operation deemed a success; this is assessed via a sperm test and, no, you can't use one of the nurses to extract the sample!!

Do bare in mind that just because you're shooting blanks doesn't mean you can't contract and indeed spread STDs- it has no effect on you're vulnerability. The only way to afford any protection against these is to use a condom!

Regards and good luck.

I got the snip just over a year ago - I had to get a benign cyst removed from my sack so decided to kill two birds with one stone (sorry - unintentional pun). No consulation with SWMBO required as but I was 45 and she was 36 and we had two kids already it wasn't necessary.

Had the op done under general anaesthetic in a day surgery unit - in at noon, home by teatime. Had a sack the size of a Jaffa for about a week, but not too much pain. All I had to take was ibuprofen tablets. Op was done on Friday, had Monday off work, back Tuesday, went to London for a long weekend on Friday and walked for miles with no problems.

.. my missus had a stroke during pregnancy so advised not to have another ..

Avalyn.
I know the seriousness of this statement and I'll come back to that in a second, but you have to smile at the other conotation it can have in this particular thread.

Anyway back to the serious side. Someone who worked for me had a stroke in her early 40's whilst at work. It frightened the crap out of me and was put down to her taking the pill.

I've got two kids with Mrs Scoobimax and we decided that was enough. I couldn't let my wife live with the threat I had seen at work so I booked in for the op. Discussion with GP for referral with wife in tow as decision impacts both lives. Once he relaised we'd thought about it for our circumstances he referred me to the hospital. Can't remember how long the wait was but probably about 6 months as stated here already.

Hardest (sorry, the puns are difficult to avoid) was lying on the table with your tackle on full view. I had it done under a local which wasn't too painful and just felt a slight tugging (sorry, there we go again) while he found and tied the tubes. Home by lunch and a dull ache in the lower regions for a couple of days. I found wearing a couple of pairs of undies was more supportive that the jock strap they supplied. I managed a game of golf on day 3 but it was a slow round!!

Hope this helps.

All interesting stuff. My situation is slightly different in that we don't have children and have no intention of having any so this is more of a contraceptive solution rather than sterilisation if you can make the distinction.

In lieu of the male pill, as neither of us like condoms and my wife has been taking the pill for half her life it's time to make some hard decisions so at least the procedure generally doesn't sound too unpleasant.

Cheers all.
