Question Slightly late MOT query

Hi all,

Excuse me if I'm being a right wuss with this: Basically, the MOT on my car has crept up on me and I can't get it booked in until the 2nd day after the MOT expires. There are local garages who may be able to fit me in sooner, but I'm a tad reluctant to leave my immaculate MY99 with them!! Is there a grace period for getting it done, what would likely happen if I got pulled over? Advice appreciated. Thanks.

Best wishes,

pretty sure that once the mot expires, it invalidates your insurance.

Best get it done mate, if in doubt stay with the car.

There is no grace period. You can get the MOT done up to one month prior to expiry and the MOT will run 12 months from expiry date.

The only way you can legally drive the car is to a prebooked MOT test or on the way home after it has failed.

You'll be ok so long as it takes you one long 2 day journey to get to your MOT station!

Ah, well, it would be being driven to a prebooked app, so I guess I'm ok then! :-)

Best wishes,

Urban Myth this .....

You are contracted to maintain your vehicle in a 'Roadworthy' condition or you have no Insurance.

Simply not having an MOT is NOT an indication that your car is unroadworthy, just that it has not had its annual inspection - simply that.

Get the garage to confirm your car's booked in (preferably in writing) and you should be ok if you get a tug. 2 days is neither here nor there to a policeman anyway, if it was 6 months out of test then maybe it would be cause for concern.

Oh, yes, a tip for everyone ........

If you have your Licence and Certif of Insurance with you when pulled, the coppa can see its taxed and (as long as its in good shape) ..... he is VERY unlikely to hand you a producer!!

I didn't remember that the first MOT was due until about a month later!

I was quite pleased that I hadn't had an accident in the mean time. Although I nearly had one in my trousers when I realised!

I once had a near collision with no mot, and before you all start, I assumed, wrongly that I had 12 months road fund with the car, not 6, cheap *** Pug dealers.

Anyhow, one of two things can happen

a) you get a good copper. Great
b) they take your statement etc and then say they will forward it onto the cps for consideration. I had both, but tbh, I never heard from them again.

I think if they see that you are genuine, they will cut you some slack. Its no means guarenteed though.

Speeding is MUCH a bigger crime - £60 min with 3 points

No MOT? what? £20 fine? Especially if you MOT it as soon as you realise/are caught

£30 FINE USUALLY i have had a couple not really worth worrying about i know people who have put in insurance claims with mots expired and been paid out

as long as it is booked in if the cops stop you they will not bother unless they are jobsworths

WRONG.

If the above conditions apply AND you pass the attitude test, don't come back with previous after a radio check or your car isn't known to police then you might not get one.

Remember, you'll have been pulled over in the 1st place for a reason so your chances of not having to produce is slim at the outset

Well, I've been pulled plenty and the Tax in the window + the Licence (clean) and the Certif. of Insurance has meant I have NEVER EVER had a producer.

So, I'm only going on experience really ........

Oh, yes, and my humour goes down well with the BIZZIES

You must have a clean record, clean motor (legally) and be polite!!

Oh, and have a valid tax disk.

Crappy cars are a good way to get 'work'.

I'm talking many years ago when I was out and about on the roads, 'cruisin' - thats why I find it amazing that youngsters are on here, instead of outside and enjoying life! I'm glad the internet wasn't around in my day, no PCs, no Playstations ..

Very good

Seriously though, when do you first need your MOT doing? Obviously after the car is 3 years old, but does it have to wait until the tax is being renewed, do the DVLA contact you? I ask cos my car is approaching that time... Perhaps I need a new one instead!

back in my yoof it was much easier to afford to go 'cruisin', petrol was afordable to hoon about all night with your mates, these days its pretty unafordable to do that for most yoof.

They probably dont have the same adventure mindset either, stuck at home cacooned up whilst they grow up, you dont see kids out on their bikes or building dens where its a bit dodgy like you used to.
