Haven't really kept up to what the latest top machine is, but Pioneer have been up their in the last few years. Try to make sure it's multi-region so you can benefit from cheaper/better US media, and maybe consider one of the multi-format machines which play DVD-Audio and SACD, along with MP3, JPEG and VCD/SVCD. If you have a look around www.avforums.com you should be able to get an answer to your question, and there are sections with direct links to magazine reviews of most machines. Also, if you buy from www.techtronics.com you can get a half price (£25) chipped scart which will allow you to output to any (except Philips DVD-R) recording media without being hampered by the macrovision copy control Same lead works on Sky and NTL for Box Office movies

Reviews rate the Pioneer 575. Cost is about £130 if you look around a bit.
