I never donated money to the african aid charities before and probably never will, but i do donate to other charities including the Tsunami appeals.
The reason being that in my mind, most of the humanitarian problems in african countries are largely due to wars between various factions and corrupt governments/dictatorships. After all the climate has been pretty similar there for thousands of years so i reckon it's unfair to entirely blame the weather. Most of the aid sent to them ends up going to the warlords and rebel groups rather than the people it's intended for, so i'm fcuked if i'm donating my hard-earned if it's going to someone like Mohammed Aidid, or a n other militia somewhere..
The current crisis in asia is entirely due to mother nature. Most of the affected countries have democratic or at least resonably stable (and hopefully less corrupt) governments, so i feel theres at least a chance that my money (or at least some of it) will go towards helping someone somewhere.
BTW, i've been to africa (Sierra Leone) so i've seen some of what goes on first hand, and that's partly why i've formed this opinion.

Not sure though, but does'nt this money go towards the 3rd world debt fund or something so in the long run the government get something out of it???

The Goverment hasnt given £50 million of their money they have given £50 million of our money which has been extracted from us through Taxes we HAVE to pay and they then spend any which way they please. personally i think that sad as the problems in Asia are and the numbers dead are beyond imagination we have our own problems at home and with 20,000 people dying in our hospitals every year because we cant afford to clean them properly can we then afford to give this money abroad?
If money is to be given in situations like this then may be it should be by individual donations only not by the government who has no money of its own only Taxes it has raised from the population, but that highlights a fundermental fact of politicans that they believe that they can spend the money i earn better than i can, i have yet to see this proved.

Must say I considered that before donating too...
If the gvt are giving 50mill, well that is derived from a portion of my (ever increasing) taxes. Should I therefore contribute again???

I really cant understand the views of some on here. Its a massive humantarian disater and there are people talking of why we are giving money and not spending it on ourselves/nhs etc.
I gave as much as I could afford to and hope that in some way it will help those who have lost evrything and that it may even prevent further deaths. Was also willing to fly out there and help out as much as poss, but it turns out they are only in need of specialist skills, such as doctors and engineers.
Guess its easy for people to justify why they are not donating/helping when so many people around them are.
I know one thing. I would hope that if I was in asia and had lost my whole family, my home, all possessions and not eaten or drank clean water for days and days, that aid would come and the world would unite and help out.
Thankfully many people are kind enough to do what they can to help. Others sit on BB boards making excuses.

Its only because Japan has come up with a whopping $500million. I don't call £180million from USA and £100million from GB nothing
If you read my post properly you will see that i am not having a go about the money getting pledged ( to which i think that they deserve all the money they get because its a disaster of titanic porportions) but to the terrorists groups such as Osama and their war on the western civilisation that we do nothing
I wonder how much Osama has pledged!!!!

So all I see, is you looking at trying to dig up an argument against OBL. Who are "we" are you put it in the title of the original post?

Just add a few points in some of the topic.
There are many reasons why it doesn't appear for charity money to go into Africa etc, on the scale of everything the amount of people in Africa outweighs many times the total amount of unfortunately killed by the Tsunami.
Another problem is that most of today’s wars are created by religious issues – in Africa, or to be exact Zimbabwe the biggest problem they have is people with AIDS, the reason is because of the twits they have running the country, in 2003 Robert Magarby said to an open audience that AIDS was created by white people and that it was a white persons disease. In the early 80’s with Ethiopia the problem was getting the food to the areas and stopping the rebels from steeling it deliberately. On a percentage with African only about 50% of the food actually gets to where it should be – it’s a very corrupt world.
My older brother is out there at the moment offering help and assistance; he was on board a merchant ship in the South China Sea. 99% of people can not afford things like housing insurance and in some parts its doesn’t exist. He’s helping with the mechanical engineering side of things such as getting power back to necessity buildings such as hospitals, his company is paying for his time. Although its not physical cash it’s a charitable gift.
That’s my piece and please do not take offence, I’ve given a little but the pennies make the pounds and the pounds will look after themselves.
