Looking for some advice on the industry and job, and from anyone that has made the step from a different background.

I am not personally but my wife has been for 17 years you must bear in mind it is a very competitive market and it is now almost impossible to find a"Niche" be aware of salaries as they nearly always state OTE which are very difficult to obtain.
If you have a specialised skill you may be lucky to find an independant company as opposed to the big boys who will turf you out much quicker if you are deemed a failure (common)
The industry really peaked in the early 90s and even IT recruitment is now struggling like a lot of jobs if you arrive at the right time and place it is good how ever be preparde to move around my wife has worked for some 12 companys in her time which varied from 2ys max to 1 week!!!
