The US shows where it's priorities lie...
The richest nation on earth, by some considerable margin.
They have just spent billions prosecuting a war that not many people wanted. They have spent nineteen trillion dollars on defnece since the end of WWII (that's equivalent to 26 millions dollars EVERY DAY since the birth of Christ people to put it into perpsective).
How much have they committed in aid to this disatser in t Asia? 15 million dollars. That's about the cost of one M1 Abrams.
No wonder they are so universally disliked throughout the world.
Geezer

Just said on BBC news that the US had donated more than any other country so far, no idea what that is though. I believe they're also doing a fair bit logistically by moving aid/relief supplies about via their military infrastructure in that region.
Not defendign them, just what i heard on BBC earlier.

A little harsh I think. The US pumps millions of dollars of aid into countries all over the world, disaster or no disaster. Personally I don't think 15 million dollars of their tax payers' money is a bad initial pledge considering they have had next to no time to assess the true extent of the problem.
The european union have only pledged 2 million pounds worth so far....

£15m from the UK
Japan & Australia not far behind.
If I was Tony Blair I would urge the public to buy one lottery ticket for the next 4 weekends and the jackpot capped at £50k with no prizes for anything less than 6 ***** and all ticket funds donated to the Asia fund and not charities in the UK.
That should raise a few million for them.

snip off BBC News
The US, Australia, Japan and India have formed an international coalition to lead aid efforts after the Indian Ocean sea surges, the US president has said.
"We will stand with them as they start to rebuild their communities," George W Bush announced at his ranch in Texas.
The US has already pledged $35m and sent its navy to help the aid effort.
Mr Bush backed calls for a tsunami alert system after what he called a "terrible disaster" and predicted other countries would join the "core group".

Be honest.
Does anyone really care more than a passing interest on the news.If you do,why wait for the govt, there are probably loads of agencies where you can make a direct donation.

Lets put it this way ...... how many of you, in your Executive 5 Bed Houses with Triple Garages and £50k/year would help out a family round the corner in their Council House who had just been flooded out and not insured??
I would hazard a guess that you would quite quickly say that the wealth of the giver doesn't mean you are obliged to give more!!
The US are helping, in money and in aid - they give aid all the time .......
Give them a break and go distribute some of your wealth to the council estate!!
Pete
ps. Big Defence projects keep 1,000's in work - you would be paying for them to be on the dole, so pay for them to work and pay back their wages in taxes!

True Pete, but I was reading today that America's little excursion to Iraq is reckoned to have cost $150 billion so far. Sort of puts $35 million in perspective doesn't it?

Why do you assume it's the responsibility of the U.S. (and to a lesser extent the E.U.) to bail (poor pun) people out?
You should be asking how many tsunami warning systems the cost of those Indian nukes would have built. Or how much help those expensive British-made warplanes bombing people in East Timor have been.
I'll be interested to see how much help our friends the Saudis give, they didn't give a **** about Somalia which is near enough their neighbour.
