sad
I too am also gob smacked at the scale of this tragedy. Mother nature can be very very brutal.
Just saw a row of small children's bodies on CNN - lined up where they had been brought to in a mosque in Indonesia. I had my little son in my arms at the time and quite some tears in my eyes I'm not ashamed to say.
Suresh,
(Just off to find a worthwhile charity to donate to help and also so I can feel better)

I don't know if I've missed a previous thread on this. But 23,000 people die and there is sod all response ( bar from Suresh) from fellow Scoobynetters. Yet there is on average 10+ replies to reminders of Top Gear being on!
Anyway rant off, I hope that the fatality count doesn't increase.

My thoughts are with the families of the victims.
It's a lot easier to pass comment on the normal type of threasds on here than it is a huge disaster like this. I really can't think of any words that put a disaster of this magnitude into perspective.

Money where-my-mouth-is time:
A hundred Euros are now electronically on their way to the Dutch Red Cross.
Every little bit helps.
Suresh
P.S. I missed Top Gear yesterday. Is it repeated?

suresh - think its on now! - well, soon then!!
as for the death toll - I'm afraid it will get much worse; there has been nothing heard from the areas' closest to the epicentre, top end of Sumatra, where most of the population live on the coastal strip.

Another sad fact is that in few days all these news headlines will just be used to wrap up fish and chips. In other words the press will just move on to some other Blunkett type story instead of keeping this disaster highlighted.

Truely terrible. Now maybe I'm being a little harsh here (and forgive me, as I have a good friend who lives out in Phuket and is therefore probably involved in all of this), but just watching Sky News, there are loads of pictures of tourists, sitting around looking bored, playing cards etc stuck in temp accomodation. Surely there is something they could do. I know that there probably are loads of people doing that, but at times like these, everyone needs to help. I for one, if I was out there, would find it very difficult to just sit around and do nothing.

i think "phuket" was their opinion, not the resort.
bear in mind most of the tourists there are hippy, surfing-type wasters, who are probably too stoned to get up.
a terrible disaster and brings a lot of simple things into a grateful perspective.

- reminds me of the tidal wave that swept across the northern beaches of Papua New Guinea a few years ago; killed about 2,000 - 5,000 people.

I couldn't understand why it never made world news (any of you guys heard of it at the time?).
Thank goodness this one seems to have grabbed world attention, which hopefully means this time the survivors won't be dying of disease and starvation.

on the phone to two work mates last night that went to phuket for xmas and new year, they are lucky to be alive!!!
they said there was no warning at all before the tsunami hit.
being in the hotel room overlooking the sea when it hit, they saw the whole thing unfold, truly horrifying.

If you watch BBC News 24 you will quickly realise that Cricket and of course the omnipresent 'football' are of equal if not greater importance than world events of this magnitude.

Ironic that such a tragic and devastating "Act of God" should occur on Christmas Day.
Wasn't it last year that a major earthquake in Iran killed loads of people at Christmas.

I have made what contribution I could, just doesn't seem like enough of an effort.
Seeing the pictures in the SMH - the bodies lying on the beach I just froze at.
It just rendered me speechless, my thoughts are with all of those affected by this disaster and may the dead RIP.

Me and my girlfriend were booked to go to the Maldives early April so it hit home even more. Lots of people we have met online going to the same resort were so looking forward to Xmas out there. Lucky no one on the island was killed but a lot of buildings destroyed - have already seen the pictures. Apparently whole island was covered in min 2ft water when the waves hit.
Obviously this pales into insignificance when you see the amount of people killed elsewhere. The fact that lots of people were still out on beaches celebrating into the early hours of boxing day morning without a clue as to what was about to happen makes it harder to swallow.
People moan about living in this country - take a look now - these lovely destinations have been trashed in the blink of an eye by mother nature.
Simon.
