Try not to worry (easy to say from here) as it will do you no good. I would imagine that cell towers and power may have been disrupted which is why you can't get through to his mobile.
Have you tried 020 7008 1500? (main switchboard number taken from http://www.fco.gov.uk)

It's likely that in affected areas, even if the cellular networks are still working they'll be highly congested. Usual practice in emergencys is to bar Joe Public from accessing the networks, so that government, military, police and emergency services can still use them (their need is usually more critical). This sort of thing is normal after big events (e.g. the Moscow bombings) otherwise the system grinds to a halt. It could even be something simple like he's moved somewhere safer and doesn't have the charger for his phone etc.
Best thing is to keep your chin up, think positive and try the helplines periodically.

Glad to hear he's ok
Doesn't sound good overall though. I know quite a few Sri Lankans - just hoping none of their family's been involved in the problems.....

Absolutely Fabulous Apples, FULL RESPECT to your Dad.
Always strikes me as sad when the first thing you hear is all the English crammed into the airport trying to get home..
Theyv'e got the week off work, why cant they do something fecking useful in their lifes.

nice one for him. A guy on my team at work was in Sri Lanka with his family - all safe now and relatively minor injuries when over 11000 are dead there.

Good to hear he's OK and helping people Apples. I've got a mate of mine who has lived out in Phuket for years. He has married a local girl, settled down with a kid etc. He normally works for an oil company in the South China Sea. Hardly the safest of jobs at the best of times! When he is in Thailand, he normally spends his time diving - taking tourists out - that sort of thing.
None of my mates in the UK has heard anything from Matt which is obviously a big concern, but it is such a mess out there, that I guess it is not surprising. Still a massive worry for everyone though.
