Thumbs down Why do you buy an expensive watch?

Quite a few bods on here are into this whole buying an expensive watch (Omegas, Breitlings etc).

So unless you earn over 100k or have millions saved, why on earth do you spend stupid amounts on a watch?? Surely this is just chav behaviour: chavs have even less money and spend their entire savings on an argos 9ct gold chain and feel good about it!

-It will last me a long long time- i have had too many cheap watches that dont last
-It may actually go up in value rather than down
-It was bought on a significant date and for a reason
- I like the style, and the quality
- Its my money- i wanted one, so i bought it.
-Because i can

Why do you spend stupid amounts on a subaru when a knackered old cav turbo or (*insert turbocharged 4x4 car of choice here*) will do the job just as well for 1/10th the cost?

Pointless question

Buying expensive possessions doesn't automatically make it chavvy.

I have a decent watch because i think it's beautiful, in much the same way i'd spend a lot on a painting if i thought it was beautiful. It's nothing to be ashamed of, and shouldn't need justification, in my opinion.

For many blokes a decent watch is probably the only piece of jewellry they wear - well it is for me anyway. A good watch should be stylish, hard wearing and last a long time. The cost of ownership probably works out at a couple of pints of beer a week, which isn't that much if you view it in those terms.

In any case I expect quite a few people who frequent this board do earn over 100k. In a sense it's not such an enormous figure nowadays - loads of IT people and programmers will earn that sort of amount.

Gary.

What Telboy said.
And god damn if we haven't just started spunking cash on art this year...however very very few people will see it, but it improves my quality of life to look at beautiful things.

I'm no expert on chav behaviour, presumably you know more about this.

I like watches. I buy what I like and what I can afford. So what?

If a watch to you is simply a tool to tell the time, then that's perfectly fine.
A car to some is simply a tool to get from A to B.

So what qualifies you to judge the (harmless) things other people can be enthusiastic about?

Each to their own. Have a nice Christmas...

On the other hand it's easy to see a prestige watch brand as having massive Chav appeal. Talking about your watch on a BBS can also be seen as Chav. However, the only watch banter taking place here seems to be between enthusiasts..so it's hard not to get involved and talk about your prized posession. Just as posting a picture of your Scoob with it's shiny new alloys is chav when taken out of context...but perfectly acceptable on a scooby bbs.

It makes me laugh that so many people get on their high horse about buying expensive watches.

How can you spend £3000 on a watch thay say, yet think nothing about spending £2000 on a PPP which depretiates quicker than the smooth sweeping hands of my watch can do a lap of the dial.

They then spend £1000+ on insurance and don't blink an eye lid!

My watch may be pricey but should last a life time and I have something to show for my hard earned.

Like nice watches but can't buy one as I am continually loosing my cheapy. Wouldn't fancy staggering the streets of London at 2 in the morning with £2k on my wrist.

blimey this has to be one of the most pointless threads I've ever seen...do what you want to do and spend as much as you want on WHATEVER you want who gives a f*ck you can't enjoy when you are dead to use it up now.

I got an original TAG from my folks when I was 21...32 now and its still going strong after one battery change, I guess that makes it good value for money.

Lifes too short to be so concerned about what other people do...get over it.

As I put on the other watch thread, I bought an Omega Seamaster 2 days ago, it is a lovely bit of kit and the ONLY piece of jewellery that I wear, I love it's looks, weight and feel, just like clothing but more expensive ;oP

My 2k watch cost less than my monthly mortgage repayments so whats the big deal?

I ve bought oil paintings at anything upto 6-8k, and Parthian amphoras at 1.5k each, all of which have no utility compared to a watch that at least will tell the time for me.

How one wastes one's money depends which socio-economic stratosphere one inhabits.

Because they are muppets.

They need to watch Fight Club, then they'll learn something.

My watch cost me £1400.

Why? Cos I appreciate quality.

Chav is boasting.........hence the same reason that council estate birds like scoobs.

Also - a watch is an item of jewellery.

If you want something to juts tell the time then by a £7.99 Casio. It's not a pisstake ; if that is what you want.

people buy expensive watches so they can talk about how much they cost.

some people use this as an excuse to say how much they spend on other things too, motgage repayments, paintings etc.

basic chav behavior.

You need to change your opening line to ....."some people..."

I don't deny "some" do. However, not all.
