Bout right,
one of our tools to produce one component from a 4 part item costs on average 60-80k based on design dev trials etc
so thats 4 tools 240k that will produce i item in component form
to run it to meet customer demand
you need 4 complete suites of tools = 1000 000 !!!

2yrs dev time x parts needed+ feckin loads..
its ball park 5-10 mill
a lot of parts are carry over or allready have the testing and other bits done.
its the new parts & tooling that cost , although these are offset by vehicles produced vs cars lifespan..
take the "old" ford focus
initially it was to be 1000000 vehicles over a ten year life with 10 years of spares on top..
it was so successful production doubled.. 1000000 over 5 years + 10 years spares
average cost £10,000 x 5000000 = 50000000000

Someone bought last years (not last season, year b4) MS car. Think he paid £2 to 3 million for it. When he picked it up from ferrari's test circuit he did some laps in it. He managed to be as quick as the fastest lap made by a 360! Pigeon!
Ferraris anual budget is 300+ million, car = 10 million? as a guess.

I seem to recall that "just" the material cost of a F1 car is circa £300K. But you arent paying for some rolls of carbon fibre and some alloys are you
On a side note I picked up a rear wishbone once. I expected it to be light. But **** me! And Im not exaggerating here. It was lighter than an empty crisp packet! When you think of the loads it has to sustain. Its VERY VERY clever engineering. And in this case was 100% British

I watched the Fifth Gear episode the other day where Frank Mountain (whoever he may be) buys a 2001 Ferrari F1 car. Subsequent enquiries have led to my current understanding that to buy one off the factory is ~£1.5 million (I guess this includes some sort of support function).
