Default credit card account number?

havent really noticed or thought about it before but...

when you get your new cc as the old one is about to expire, does the 16digit number always change? isnt that your account number? are cc's different to debit cards as im sure that hasnt changed?

apparantly it always changes.

edited to say, mines never changed though, thats through the halifax, even if it did change it would only ever be the last 6 numbers as the first 4 are the sort code and bank details.

Thats the card number and will always change. The only digits that will be the same will be the first 6, which indicate the bank and type of card.

The account no. is a different number all together.

Didn't want to get into this as is long and conveluted to explain.

Basically most banks have now dropped the account number from the card number, a few haven't though.

If your account number isn't part of the card no, then it may not be on the card at all. All that is needed is the card number, the issue no or issue date and the expirity date. The transaction houses have translation DB's that work out who's who and authorization allowances.

I doubt it mate, card issuing is so tightly controlled its untrue. You wouldn't believe how many cards we stop a day.
