as the subject suggests, whats the best value system out there?
steering towards PDA based ones, but open to suggestions.

Have a look in computer related there is a thread on this subject with big replies.
I have a Sony PDA and will be going for Tom Tom 3 and seperate gps reciever.

pda based, the best is tomtom software, with mine i use the tomtom bluetooth gps unit works extremely well
becomes even cheaper if ya get dload the software
