Thumbs up Ali v/s Tyson

I've just watched a good contest of Heavy-weights : Lewis v/s Rosenberg.

I was wondering what would have happened if Ali met Tyson?

For my money, Michael Tyson was the most aggressive, but Cassius Clay was the perfect athlete for his era.

Any opinions folks?

Tyson would have beat the crap outta Ali - mainly cos Ali was a jibbering wreck by the time Tyson hit the scene

Yeh difficult one, I think that Tyson in his hey day was pretty much unstoppable. A complete package of fast hand speed, aggression and power.

The most Tyson like fighter Ali fought was Frazer and Frazer broke Ali's jaw I think the score was one win each.

I Think Ali was the best thing to happen to boxing and was a superb athlete.

firstly i think you should respect him and call him mohammed ali and not 'cassius clay'
my money is on ali anyday. tyson was strong but no way as big as george foremon whop ali took all that he had and knocked him out. tyson was fast but no way could he float and dance around the ring like the great Ali

It was. Ali, in his prime, far to clever for Tyson.

Tyson had better fitness levels than Foreman, Forman had punched himself out by the third round.Tyson would have still been hitting with bad intent throughout the match. My heart would say Ali every time, but my head tells me, that Tyson was an awsome devastating puncher and I have never seen any fighter as explosive as Tyson.

[QUOTE=mo,s scoobymonster]firstly i think you should respect him and call him mohammed ali and not 'cassius clay'

Why not call him by his given name?

BTW. He was, and still is, a hell of a guy.

I think though, my original question has gone off-beam.

Who do you reckon would win in a contest :

Ali (AKA Clay) v/s Tyson

Both in their prime.

I think if Tyson got a chance to stick one or two on Ali then he'd flatten him

Tyson has a fragile mind; Ali would have him almost beat before they stepped in the ring. The fitness argument is irrelevant, for such a discussion put them both in the same era and they would have similar fitness levels.

Explosive power is extremely tiring this was used against many of Ali's more powerful opponents during his career, he simply let them destroy themselves then he finished the job.

Except for Cooper - a fight I watched live Cooper did catch him with the 'ammer but the bell went at the count of 8 and saved Ali's day. Cooper then got cut badly but Ali was the better fighter really.

Shortly after that Liston was on the scene, a sort of Tyson of the day, and Ali easily beat him although I think Liston threw the fight. DL

Ali wiped the floor with Foreman

Foreman would have and even still can waste Tyson....

J Fazier was a nutter too, but Ali sorted him out with his tactics

Ali is by far the best boxer ever seen, and certainly the best heavyweight by far..
Holyfield is pretty awesome too...but Ali is in a diff league.

At least GF stood the pace, bought religion and marketed kitchenware!

And is still around.

Shame for Ali (is it Parkie's, he,s got) because he wasn't a thug like Michael (alleg) is.

My view is this, both men in their prime,it could go either way. There will never be a conclusion to this argument. Tyson comes out looking for a 1 punch knockout, if he can keep up with Ali's movement and make it connect he'll win. If Ali can keep moving for a few rounds, Tyson will become frustrated and sloppy, Ali will then pick him off.

The boxing scene in Ali's day and the boxing scene in Tyson's day are two very different things.

Each at their best my money would be on Tyson. Too powerfull, too angry, and just to mean.

In 1986 to see Tyson enter the ring was a terryfiying thing to see on tv, imagine being the guy he was fighting!!

Ali would have wound Tyson up and had him punching air for 5 or 6 rounds. He'd have knocked him out by the 10th.

Tyson was an animal and a great fighter, but not a great boxer. And remember, their fighting weights weren't that far apart.

Tyson would have mullered Ali if both were fighting in their prime, his fitness levels were masively higher and despite what people think, he wasnt stupid in the ring, he knew how to box, its easy to forget now how brilliant Tyson was. As has been said they were very diferent era's though, so its imposible to judge this objectively.

The best pound for pound boxer was probably sugar ray robinson, Ali copied his style and was the first heavyweight to use the ring like a middleweight. With regards to his name, you should use his chosen name, Muhamed Ali, not what his slave family name was. He made a decision to make a stand on that at a time when it caused him major problems in the USA, so he should be respected for that.

Tyson more fit than Ali....hmm..

Sugar Ray........excellent boxer....AGREE

Ali was the best boxer and the most exciting by far, he was the one to introduce tactics to have a psycological edge over his opponents.

Obviously his stance against the induction into the vietnam war, etc is also very important, but as a boxer....he is a legend.

Cheers for replying John.

I'm not a boxing fiend, as you will have noticed...

I don't understand the thing about Ali's name though, I thought this came later?

Respect to the guy, in plentiful amounts...

He did a lot for coloured and underpriveledged people in his era, a brave man and superb athlete.

What he did took guts.

PS. What about The originanal "Rocky", Marciano?

They could punch in those days, before the advent of Don King and peeps like him, allegedly.

The name change came in the mid '60s. I still have The Evening News Special Edition for Saturday May 21 1966. Headline, above "FIGHT OF THE CENTURY" is Clay meets Cooper at Highbury. But the "How They Compare" list is headed Muhammad Ali vs Henry Cooper. Ali was 14st 8lb and Cooper was 13st 8lb.

Compare those weights with the fight early this morning!! DL

Nice one M8, you must be as chronologically challenged as I am.

I can't believe their respective weights though.

Amazing !
