You've got to be candid with the seller and ask them to send it as a gift or at a v low value. If they won't, try someone else. In any case it's the luck of the draw even if the seller puts the true value on the customs note. Sometimes you just don't get charged. I guess it's fair to say the larger the item the more likely it is to be spotted.

i use to ask the person(company) to please declare a low value on the item.
and i explain that the tax/vat etc costs a bomb.
normally they do, sometimes they declare it under 10% of the real value of the item
sometimes i don't pay tax/vat
once i paid over £20. imagine how much would it be if they declared it full.

The cost of the item is around $700, I'll have to ask if they'll reduce the value for import purposes, or possibly get it shipped to a friend in the states and then forward it from him as a gift!!

I just bought steel rods and forged pistons from the states , they put on the customs note that they had mchined my pistons and rods at a cost of $150 , it actually cost me about $1500 and didnt pay any duties on them , they said they do it for all UK customers
