It was very foggy here today & a white van came whizing round the corner of our road, smacked mirrors with a builders van parked outside our house and also managed to wreck the mirror on our Discovery

Between the 3 people who saw the incident we have a number plate (not 100% sure of), but the police say it doesn't match a van... We think there was a building firms name on the side. We have phoned & they say the number we have doesn't match any of their vans... (not surprising really )

Any ideas on how to solve this???

Ask them to come round and give you a quote. Hopefully they'll turn up in the van...

And even if he comes round in the van what are you going to say? "pay for my wing mirror - I know it was you"? I'd just get to a scrappy and get a new mirror - annoying but its not worth hassling over it, you wont get the van driver to pay for a new one.

Go down their yard and look to see if you can spot the van.
