Default Tattoo 'Recovery'

I'm looking to get my tattoo towards the back end of next week.

How long will it take for my back to heal completely?

Secondly, any advice once I've got the tattoo? Keeping it clean, dry, etc.

Google seemed to pull up some sound advice, as usual.

For anyone that's interested:

I'm also looking to hear about people and their own experiences regarding their first tattoo.

Don't bother mate. Seriously. I never understand why people want them. You might like the shirt you're wearing now, but a few years down the line you'll probably hate it. Aren't you worried it'll be the same with your tattoo?

Buy a nice shirt or something instead.

I made a valid contribution to this thread....

About my love of tattoos and the people who have them......or something like that, I honestly can't remember!

Make sure that you moisturise it regularly and keep it covered whilst it scabs....I can't remember what I used on mine, but I think some moisturiser and vaseline did the trick. Mine healed with in a week and have caused me no problems since.

I have lots 8 all in all arms and back Japanese styles Samaria warrior's etc

I found just leaving them caused large scaps not good you can loose ink and scar them or catch the scab ouch

I was told after one being done to do this
Leave it alone covered for a day ( clingfilm was applied with antseptic cream)
The next day took off the clingfilm get some nice warm water and a flannel
Gently wash the area removing any blood , etc
Apply antiseptic cream I used E45 and keep clean
After a few days 3-4 all was healed
Removing the blood etc stops large scabs appearing so its more like dry skin coming off and not big scabs trying to fall off
I guess all people have different healing times etc
But this worked for me
Mmmmm got me thinking now do I want another one ... and where to I have it

I'm not worried in the slightest. I've had it designed to my every specification and it is something that relates to me, at this stage of my life. I can honestly say that I'm confident that I'm not going to hate it - I see it still being a part of me 10, 20, 30 years down the line.

Davyboy, let me refresh your memory (to the best of my knowledge):

It's probably a good idea that your post had been deleted/moved, as you'd have caused offensive to many on here. I also gave a response, but that was deleted along with your useless comment, which basically said 'each to their own'.

Thank you for the advice - a week doesn't seem too bad.

Like I've mentioned above, I've had something designed that does mean something to me, and I can see it still being a part of me many years down the line.

Thank you, a nice and detailed response. What do you currently have? is it just the one?

Cheers for all of your responses, it's appreciated.

I have three now, one on each upper arm and one in the middle of my back.

If you want a quick heal, with no thick scabbing whatsoever try this.....for 3 days, keep it covered with cling film and prep H, changing it twice a day. After the three days, no cling film but keep applying prep H until completely smooth.

This is what I did with the one on my back and it was COMPLETELY healed in 5 days with no patchiness etc.

Talking

Go with what Nick and Chelle said - mine all healed in a week or so. If the scabs get a little itchy, don't scratch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As for the 'attention seeking t***' commentator - I thought your girlfriend had a tattoo - do you call her the same sort of thing?
And to the other negative idiots on this thread - people with tattoos don't care if you don't have a tattoo

Pete,

Don't you think I've thought about this already? I didn't just wake up one morning and decide to get a tattoo, it's something that I've considered for the past year or two. Now, I'm at the correct stage in my life for one, I've got something designed that I love and see as being a part of me for the rest of my life, so there's no reason for me to not get one.

It's all a matter of opinion, but what I don't get is why some people think that their opinion is more valid, perhaps more 'right', in a sense, than everyone else's.

I had the tattoo last Saturday, and since then, E45 has been my best friend.

However, the tattoo is starting to 'peel' slightly. Should this happen?

The scab will come off but only once it is completely dry, thats normal. If it scabs too early then the colour may be patchy

DON'T PEEL IT

It can sometimes happen

Remember that when you dry it after a shower/bath you must not rub it with the towel just pat it

Use preperation H (piles cream) like said here. It is better than any moisuriser because it takes alot longer to dry up. I only have the 1 tattoo but I used prep H for a week or so (maybe a little longer) and had no scabs. Be VERY careful with scabs because when they break off they will discolour the tattoo and the resulting scar tissue will make it look iffy.

GET SOME PREP H.

pslewis' rantings remind me of the time when my Dad first noticed my sister had her belly button pierced:

"What the HELL is that???? what on earth do you think you look like??? Would you like it if I walked around with a f*cking bone stuck through my nose??? Well???"

LOL, happy days!

I've used E45 around 7-8 times a day, ensuring it's been moist all day round, then again during the evening and early morning.

I'm going back on Saturday to see if there's anything that needs touching up, along with perhaps having some darker highlights added. So if there's a problem, I'm sure he'll sort it.

I found e45 cream/lotion to be the best thing.

Prep H just didn't agree with my skin - got a nasty burning sensation.

You're not supposed to use it for long anyway. Its just to help with the bleeding in the first couple of days. Prep H has some sort of Shark extract in it that shrinks blood vessals (hence why it releives piles), this shrinking reduces the amount of bleeding and therefore saves your bedding/clothing.

It doesn't really do anything for the tatoo itself.

The important thing (as already mentioned) is the keep it moisturised and dont pick the scabs!

Other advice is keep it out of the sun - always wear sunblock on it when on holiday. And dont forget to moisturise with e45 lotion a few times a week even after it has healed - particularly if you have had a lot of black inkwork.
