Clarkson on Radio 2
Anyone else just heard him having a war of words with some rambler environmentalist over his driving up the mountain stunt, it was hilarious
his hit back over ramblers spoiling a good mountain view was class

Clarkson was full of sh*t as usual. I'm not a rambler but to say the Ramblers Association are a branch of the communist party, WTF? I am however a mountain biker and I've seen first hand the damage done to green lanes by these selfish morons in 4 wheel drive vehicles. The countryside needs protecting from these people and Clarkson was setting a very poor example.
And for him to try and turn it into an issue of freedom is laughable. What about other peoples freedom NOT to have the country lanes churned up and rendered inaccessible? Unless laws are in place to regulate this kind of behaviour it will go on regardless because some people are inherently inconsiderate, give them an inch and they take a mile.

Stupid anyway, they drove up ONE mountain ONCE, probably never to drive up there again. I wanna know who's gonna clear the crap that ramblers leave over the place. Horrbile footprints all over the nice meadows etc.

You should see the damage done to some trails by us by mountain bikers.
I don't see the difference to be honest. Right to roam is right to roam, does it matter what you are in?
OK, 4wd vehicles are gonna cause more damage then bikes, and bikes more than people, but how many times do you see 4wds doing what he did? I see huge numbers of people walking the trails by us, a fair number of bikers and 4wds on them once in a blue moon.
The Ramblers Association seem to think they have some devine right to wander whereever the **** they want in limitless numbers, but whine at people like Clarkson who was demonstrating how good British engineering is in an unusal way. Tossers.
Geezer

Here you go, here's an example of a green lane near where I live ruined by the four wheel drive brigade.
Morons. Fortunately they are now banned from here.
Would LOVE to see some picture evidence of this!

I was given a right b0ll0cking for being on my mountain bike by a National Trust bloke (on a 6 wheel quad type thing) near the top of Pen-y-Fan in Wales once. He told me that bike tyres concentrate the force in a smaller area then people walking due to the small contact patch so do more damage than walkers (sounds reasonable). Plus skidding the back tyre cuts into the ground and forms channels that grow bigger when rainwater runs down them.
I asked him why they were allowed to use the 6 wheelers and he explained that the contact area was spread out over 6 big soft low-pressure tyres therefore caused less damage tan a person walking.

On parks near us the mountain bike does more damage to the grass than the quad bike, due to contact pressure & the psi of the quads tyres of less than 4psi. Truly amazing.
That said we are the worst enemy to our planet.......quad, 4x4, mountain bike, global warming etc etc I doubt one group could be blamed more than anyother

Basically everyone who visits the outdoors causes damage some more than others true. If you look at the fells up here in the lakes there is huge damage caused by walkers.
The environmental impact of a reasonably ridden mtb causes no more or slightly less damage than a set of boots but it still does cause damage.
It’s all about managing that impact that’s why we have footpaths and bridleways.
Obviously driving 4x4's up mountains is a bit stupid on Mr Clarkson’s part, but not only environmentally. He's opened a can of worms there and could have even helped the 'ban 4x4 cause'. Had he drive it through a muddy forest know one would have batted an eyelid.
These things have to be managed because there just to many of us, there should be areas were you could take your 4x4 or enduro bike to ensure as little impact on the environment as possible.

Excelled I thought, even more kudos to him considering he was squared up against such a pair of dicks.
words to the effect of....( and off the cuff on the radio)....
******** : "so why do people need 4X4's in towns?"
JC: They don't, thats why we drove it up a mountain in scotland "
sorry, but he is the man.
11/10.

Also, would you be complaining if a local farmer had done that in his tractor?

Must say I was appalled at this one sided and abusive diatribe. JC was so restrained under provocation and extreme abuse. I would have expected him to explode after some of the things the tree hugger called him.
JC has risen in my estimation and I was impressed at his ability to resist the temptation to resort to the same kind of abuse he was subjected to.
It was the first time I have ever listened to this so called interviewer. Is he as incompetent as he seemed or was he merely being controversial by not reigning in the self important publicity seeking half wit who subjected JC to this tirade?
