Default Illuminated building seen from the M1 - what is it?

Went up to Sheffield on Friday night and whilst stop / starting on the M1 there was a very impressive looking building lit up to our right (so roughly east).

We were between Tibshelf Services and Woodall Services - the building was maybe a mile or two away from the motorway across the valley. Probably more the Woodall end of the section. It was lit up with white floodlights with a big frontage visible from the motorway.

Any suggestions to what it was?

Chris.

I think you might be onto a winner Sal

http://www.sealedknot.org/knowbase/d...3_Bolsover.htm says:

Bolsover Castle
Set high above the MI 6 miles east of Chesterfield, Bolsover Castle catches the eye, especially when floodlit at night.
Thanks!

I think I noticed it last time we were driving down the M1, I remember seeing a large floodlit building possibly about a mile away across a valley and up a hill somewhere in that area I meant to look it up after but forgot so thanks for reminding me

Yep it'll be Bolsover Castle, I can actually see it from my house. Looks quite nice on a clear evening.

It was almost certainly Bolsover Castle; did you notice a nasty smell at the same time, a little like old carbolic soap?

Hmm, can't say I did.

We did go to Chez Lahlou in Commonside for tea on Saturday night. I've never had such a blow out of food!

The smell comes from the Coalite coking plant which is just past Bolsover on the same side North bound. It belches out masses of dioxin (you might have heard about the local dairy farms milk being bought by the state and destroyed): but its allowed to carry on, because they were doing it before we realised that dioxin was the most carcinogenic substance known to man.
