Not the best Saturday night ever...
Set off from home with Mrs K, daughter and 10 of her mates in a hired mini bus for her birthday treat. Just leaving the village and a dog ran out straight in front of us. I was only doing about 30 but it didn't stand a chance - the noise was absolutely sickening. I pulled over and ran back to the dog who was beyond veterinary help. I called the old bill who logged the incident and my contact details. The dog wasn't wearing a collar so contacting the owner was out for the time being. The accident happened right outside a friend's house so she gave me a blanket to wrap the body in and I put it in her shed.
The rest of the evening was somber affair to say the least. Being a dog owner meant I knew exactly what the people who owned the one I'd hit were going through and they must have been worried sick. I called the police first thing in the morning to see if anyone had contacted them and it transpires the lady who owned the dog had reported it missing the previous night 90 minutes after I'd run it over. Had the police rung me? Had they bollocks! This poor women had gone through a night of agony because some pen pusher hadn't been able to marry up 2 blindingly obvious related bits of information.
I asked for the women's number, rang her and gave her the bad news. She was very understanding and I think relieved to have heard something. I took the body round having picked it up from our friend's house and I hadn't quite prepared myself for the reaction of the children - bloody hertbreaking, it really was.
It turns out that neighbours of theirs had some celebrations involving fireworks and their dog had done its pieces jumping through a small open window, out into the garden, through the fence and onto the road....
I hope I never have to endure an episode like that again.
Cheers

Happened to me once too, no chance of missing the poor dog just like you. Sorry you had to go through all that. I hate killing any animal like that and it is so much worse when it is a pet.

this saddens me so much it hurts
i have two bull terrier puppies who thankfully dont give a monkeys about loud bangs
the staffordshire i had for 8 yrs used to suffer, and i mean suffer like nothing else the poor thing used to literally work himself into such a state his fur would be wet. I remember that this government promised a ban on fireworks being sold outside of the one week of the year. I cant tell you how sorry i am that this happened to this lady and yourself

bad luck.
I'm hoping to train our pup to get used to loud noises at an early age. The last one was such a pedigree gundog that when we let off screamer rockets in the garden, he tried to chase after them and fetch them!
Very sobering.

You should take pride in the way you handled a very hard situation mate. It wasn't your fault, just a very unfortunate accident. I've said it before and I'll say it again: fireworks should be confined to public displays!
The kids will get over it and you set them a very good example.

Exactly the same thing happened to me in 1990.
A boxer dog ran out from behind a hedge and I didn't have a chance to brake...... I lost the rag at the owner who had called his lead-less dog across a main road
His kids were present and witnessed their pet being run over and I'll never forget hearing the youngster say
Sickening.....but even worse was paying the excess on my insurance for £600 worth of damage to the front of my car, as my lawyers wrote to him but felt it not worthwhile pursuing.
Sad to see a dog loose its life due to it's owners stupidity
Sorry you had to go throug-h this as well... not nice
