Computer Luddites
I've seen a few over the years, but there is this girl in our office who insists on printing everything on paper and then handing it to you. For example, if someone emails her and she needs to forward it on she will print it and then hand it to them!
Generally my tolerance for this is very low and if someone does this I will bin the paper infront of them and tell them to email it to me, but I didn't have an opportunity this time....
Yesterday I asked her to type up some numbers into a spreadsheet (so I could import them into an application) and I found out this morning that she went and printed out the spreadsheet and put it in my pigeon hole ffs!!!!
I went into her directory to find the file and it wasn't there, the silly tart had deleted it. I have found it on last night's backup though.
So, should I:
a) recover the file and get on with it
b) don't tell her about the backup and make her type it all again to teach her a lesson

Same as mj said! She can't be expected to know if she hasn't been shown, but if she has been shown - tell her you need to electronically in order to import it.

Hello
BUT after she has typed it, you should show her how to send it to you via e-mail just to make sure and say that it is how you would like communication in the future.
Steve.

For the avoidance of doubt, she knows how to attach files and I told her I needed it electronically. And in any case why on earth would I give her some figures on one bit of paper and want the same figures back on a different bit of paper??
Looks like she's going to be busy this morning!

I think the amount of paper we use has got worse over the last few years. We are all so dependent on computers, but I also have a girl in my office who spends hours every day for "research" printing out various websites etc. I feel like showing her how to book mark sites, but I can't be arsed.
And we are a document management company who is trying to get people to use less paper by implementing specialised software!

B) but once she has retyped it show her how she could have recovered it if she took the time to find out how things work - wokk smarter not harder.
Oh and it is easy to say B this but has she had any proper training, not just 10 mins of someone showing her on her induction?

maybe you should tell her that saving the work that she does is also useful.. in todays world of massive hard drives and whatever else, a few excel spreadsheets hardly take up room

Ok here's what I have done so far:-
1) Recovered the file and imported it into the application so my shedule remains unaffected
2) Told her that a piece of paper is useless, please can she email the file as per original instructions
3) Now watching her faff around and get all flustered trying to find the file
I could be a complete b*stard here but I think I'll give her 10 mins and then copy the file back into her directory and let her "find" it. Never say that ajm cannot show compassion!

The proof, however, is in the pudding... File just arrived in my inbox about 15 mins after I "planted" it back in her home directory for her... so it appears she is perfectly capable of attaching files.
Duely sent her back a thank you email (for her to print ) and will leave the matter at that. She's happy, I'm happy and now she knows what "send it to me electronically" means. There really is no better way to learn to swim than having your head held under in the deep end!

She probably hasn't had any formal office suite training, but then neither have I!

Had I guy work for me once - Gave him a package adressed to some company in Engerland (We're in Scotland). Asked him to "pop it in the post".
Following day I'm going through my post and this package is in my in tray.
Carl had taken the package I had given him and assumed that "Pop this in the Post" meant take this down to the post room and put it in my In tray so I can get it back in the morning.
I Kid you not - There are some real Idiots out there.
