iPOD Vs Sony NWHD1
Thinking of getting one of these for Xmas, was wondering if anyone had used both and weather they could say wich one they though was best???
-like the sony as its a bit less well known, dont have the 'please stab me
and steal my iPOD' earphones and have always liked Sony products...
-20gb is the same sort of price as the ipod 40gb though. thats the only
down side i can see???
though i reckon space for 900 C.D's will keep me going for a fair while!
Cheers

Also look at iRiver, Creative etc. better value imo.
The headphone thing with the iPods is easily solved It'd be a daft reason to reject getting one.

I would get the iPod over the Sony on all levels, but that is me.

I understand that the Sony doesn't support MP3's but uses ATRAC and conversion takes forever. Is all this true? If so what is the point of this unit?
Was looking at portable music player and don't know what to get, I was unimpressed with the cost/quality ratio offered by the IPOD.

sony does support MP3's, think that was a rumour that circulated just before its release (probaly done by Apple!!!)
does MP3, WMA and A-Track. think you can fit more on with the A-track but can use MP3 etc...
also supports some Microsoft software aswell so you can use it to share data...
plus the sony is only just bigger than a credit card!!!! always though the iPod was a bit too bulky...

About the Atract thing yes it is true, but Sony will be adding MP3 support in the future, so keep that in mind.
I would pic the iPod first and foremost because I'm a Mac guy, but after owning one for over a year and having daily 8 hours usage it has never given me the slightest problem I don't have a bad word to say about it. Nor have the 10+ PC iPods in my office.
The overall deal with the syncing to iTunes automatically and feeding the iPod without your intervention (unless you want it) is such a convenience. There is also the added bonus of loads and loads of accessories that you don't get with other players. The build quality, the thought that you can see has gone into it (you will know what I mean if you get one and see the box ). The overall package is what gets me.
Not to mention I've not read a good Sony pod review, and any company that tries to force its closed DRM and format onto its customers without any alternative has only bad intentions in my opinion
If you want an iPod alternative, the iRivers are much, much better than the Sony's.

tbh, its a physical size against price argument.
both support mp3 formats and such
question is,do you want to pay the extra for it being credit card size
or pay less and get the same capactiy but slightly larger, although not much.
i would also like to say that i own an ipod and find them really easy to use, can even use it pokin at it through my trouser pocket at skool!

Umm, wasn't Apple, was Sony themselves saying that the unit would NOT support MP3, then they had a change of heart, probably due to the fact they realiszed that no slightly savvy consumer would want to get a unit that did not play MP3 files. I certainly remember seeing stories on this on The Register and BBC News, and laughing out loud at how silly Sony was being.
I myself have a nice new 40GB 4G iPod. Why? Well, principally due to me being a bit of a mac geek (work for mac software developer), I did not really look at other options, and there are plenty out there. I liked the total and utter plug and play ability of the iPod. The autosynch on insert of the iPod was pretty good too. Though I'm not actually using that at the moment (as I've reformatted it as PC spec, so I can use it on both Mac and PC, well, I had to get 150 CD;'s onto the thing, plus I'll have another 70 odd to get on when I get back to the UK, and I've only a PC back there).
There is also the design of the thing, it is rather lovely, ok, a might sound a bit poncy, but figure this, I didn't go for the ultra poncy iPod Mini, mainly as it's a rip off.
