**** year for pets
What the hell do animals do to deserve this....first, my border collie gets epilepsy, then, in quick succession, my 16 year old cat goes deaf and gets a hyperthyroid problem, which was only accurately diagnosed after she had a heart attack in the car on the way to the vets! Then, just to add a spot of icing to an already well decorated cake, Claire rings me at work on Tuesday telling me she thinks the cats eyesight is suss. When I get home, she seemed to be blind in one eye, by the time we're at the vets, she's totally blind, with two detached retinas. How the hell can this be fair? She's never done anything more blameworthy than be bone idle, never leaves our property, can't be arsed to chase birds, etc. Way of the world just defeats me sometimes. Anyone else had this problem with an elderly cat, and is there a way of restoring her eyesight, without putting her through too much trauma? Think I already know the answer really, but it's heartbreaking to watch her struggle with another problem, after coming to terms with all the others she's had.

Not exactly helpful BEW. To many people, pets become part of the family. Irrational maybe, but all the same very painful for those involved.
Micared - you already know the answer to your question - let the vet put your cat to sleep and end the suffering. 16 years is pretty damn good for a cat - the last thing you want them to do is suffer when they get that old.

I agree with Chris L, our cat got to 18 with some help, but when it got too intrusive, he didn't seem to have the heart to carry on like that, he just seemed to be existing, were before he had a life. So we had the vet come round and put him to sleep. And whilst it hurt, I think in the end knowing we saved him anymore suffering was a comfort.

mica - you have my full sumpathy. We lost 4 cats in four years. Pixie just collapsed one day & died at age 13, then Dixie (her litter mate) died of feline aids (no idea he had it until 2 days before he went) a few months later.
Then Smokey (age 19) had a bladder tumour burst and had to be put down. Then 18 months ago our little Frankie who had kidney problems for a year finally lost his battle and the vet put him to sleep at home.
However, frankie went blind about 6 months before he died. All we did was provide him with a litter tray indoorsand did not move furniture about and he got about quite well in the home.
All I say, is that providing that the cat is not in pain, then give her a chance. They are great animals and can adjust. It took Frankie a few weeks to adjust but he had another 6 months of relatively good quality life (and pain free).

Bad year for our Dog, the ******* still alive, still blind and still stinks, the hole is dug but it keeps on going.
Just drove back from Wales with it alternately just stinking as it normally does and blowing off lavishly, all four windows get wound down at the same time.
It came as part of the package with the wife 12 years ago, before anyone moans, the dog is treated really well (better than me usually).

Our cat went blind, she was the sweetest thing on four legs, she went downhill fast after that and lost all hope of living, we had her put down in september last year, very sad. she was 18 and had no teeth but was a fantastic cat with lots of attitude

BEW, that's right, it's a wind up, specifically designed to attract people with the I.Q. of a soap dish, so congratulations, you get 1st prize! Yeah, I do have a nice life now, didn't always, so thanks for your obvious concern, hope you don't have pets, unlucky for them if you do. Suspected I'd get a response of this nature at some point in this thread from one tosser or another, unfortunate that it had to be the first one. Perhaps, in future you could direct your constructiveness elsewhere, failing that, just **** off and die.
Chris's scooby, my dog had her annual vaccinations earlier this year ( now aged 7 ) and two weeks later began having epilepsy. She's been to a specialist in Hertfordshire several times, ' cos there were complications, and is now on tablets which , while not eliminating the fits completely, do seem to moderate them to a degree. Hope your dog doesn't suffer too much, can be an extremely distressing thing to witness.
ChrisL, might sound strange, but her quality of life , imo, doesn't seem to be the issue at the moment. She seems to have come to terms with her blindness better than I have, the tablets for her hyperthyroid have stopped the related problems she was having ( breathlessness, loss of weight, etc. ) As for her deafness, that affects us more than her, she just ignores everyone now! Know what you mean about suffering, and although it'll be an extremely difficult thing to do, when I have to, I will.
I ' inherited ' the cat from a friend who died about 5 years ago, and she's our last link to him... I'd feel like I was doing him wrong by not giving her every chance, likewise, I'd feel the same if I thought she was genuinely suffering. Just difficult to understand why it should all happen to her.
Agree with you Reffro, when I see her lose heart, it'll be decision time.
Appreciate the input of those who clearly are animal lovers.

how can you have affection for a creature that walks up to you and purrs, because it want s food.
once fed, it returns to its feral state and bites you without provocation before finding the first available exit.
we have given up trying to keep it in at night, it trys to climb out of upstairs windows such is its desire to be out.
It is the most agressive antisocial cat amongst humans, but if another cat comes int the garden and challanges it .. it runs a mile.
the daft part is when we got it as a kitten, it was infested with fleas, and was dying from anemia.. (the vet gave it 24 hrs) i spent the next 24 hrs feeding it babyfood and it survived... to become the cat above..
prehaps the vet could see the outcome, and was advising me for the best!!!
as i said before, given that we dont see it for days on end, i wont miss this one when its gone..
(i blubbed my head off when the last one went, now that was a great cat!!)

The last 3 years have been utter ****e for me with animals
End of Feb ’01 had to have one GSD [aged 11] put down with cancer
End of March ’01, had our other GSD [aged 10] put down with a grossly enlarged heart as she couldn’t breathe – no warning of heart trouble whatsoever.
Same day made the decision to have our Border Terrier put down too, as she was 19, deaf/arthritic/senile and she wouldn’t have coped on her own.
May 2001 our 7 month old kitten got killed by a train - single track railway, very few trains
October ’02 our 5 month old kitten also got killed by a train
May 2003 decided to have another GSD, so after a long search to find the right dog, we got one, only to find out last October, that she has fairly severe hip dysplasia, although the lineage from 5 generations back all had low hip scores
Then 3 weeks ago, the sister of the 7 month old kitten we had, got run over and killed by a car over a mile a way from home. She was such a sweet cat, small and timid and I never realised she travelled so far from home
I won’t have any more cats and this will be the last dog… can’t go through the heartbreak of losing anymore again.

Micared as Chris said that smount of time is very good for a cat. If tha cat is in no obvious pain/stress then i dont see any reason to have him/her put to sleep but I think you need to decide whats best for him/her and wether you really want to put him/her through it all.
BEW you really are a heartless ****! and i agree totally with micareds comments about you he couldnt have put it any better!
Mart if you dont want a pet then why the hell do you have one!
we used to have a black labrador <sp> when i was growing up she reached the age of 16 and he back legs gave way we had to call the vet out to have her put to sleep and both me and my sister were there when it happened and i can still remember it to this day (i was about 9) It is hard when you see it happening but its 100% better than watching them suffer.
Redkop sorry to hear about all the loss's Im the same when any of mine have died but I will never be without a cat or a dog and i think you will probably be the same when all of a sudden your house is empty no animals to feed no dogs barking or to walk no cats to sit on your lap purring etc

Micared - I think you missed BEWs point, but I think suggesting that he **** off and die is a little strong???
I have worked for a small animal vet for many years. He loves animals and cares very deply for them, would never hurt an animal and would never see an animal in pain, but even in his circumstances, he is a bit of a cynic when it comes to owners who cannot differentiate between a child and a scraggy moggy

On a lighter note, here's a cat that will certainly have to be put down........if that fellow wants to retain his lumbar vertebrae intact!!!
And here's our vicious beast! Sucks up to the missus big time and spars with me 'till blood is drawn. A couple of weeks ago our living room window was open 1.5 inches and the ****** flew across the room like an exocet scaring the **** out of us and caught a pigeon through the gap That's ma girl!
P.S. I'm on night shift and things are a bit slow.

RedKop, I knew about you last loss, but you seem to have had a an unlucky streak with pets. I also had a Border Terrier (Toby) when I was a kid - they are the best dogs ever!
I also lost a beloved cat earlier this year. Those that don't understand how a pet can become part of a family are extremely insensitive if they cannot recognise this.
I would also say that when a pets time has come, as hard as it is, a visit to the vet is in order. We kept our very ill cat going for far too long for purely selfish reasons. A mistake I don't intend to make again.

Jerome, Border Terriers are cracking little dogs, but incredible 'escape artists'
This is the first time I have been without a cat, but I think I would be too paranoid to let one out if I got another... when they don't come home - it's the most awful feeling

yes we do want a pet,
if you read the post properly you would understand...
first cat superb, absolute cracker, friendly fun what i call a proper cat.
when it lost playing chicken with the cars, we decided to replace it.
the cat (loose term) we have now is in effect a semi feral thing, it uses us purely as a base to obtain food, and a refuge when it decides it dosent like the weather/ fireworks.
once it has fed, it rips up carpets in its desire to escape, it allows one stroke of its fur before turning and using teeth claws ..
likewise when it wants food... all sweetness and light until it has its fill, then turns into a feral cat... not seen for days on end then turns up for food.
hence my comments, when this one goes i wont miss it.

Been at work 'til now. Sorry to see so many others with pet related probs, hope you all get things resolved, or are able to come to terms with your losses. Sorry if I offended anyones sensibilities with my rant at BEW, ( only fastbloke last time I looked, but he's already got the hump with me from the DIY thread......only joking FB ). Re-read it and don't feel inclined to retract it though, under the circumstances. Not the content of his post I found so irritating, more the mindset of someone like that who's prepared to respond in that manner. Thanks to all others who've posted, just a matter of monitoring the situation and acting accordingly, think it's worse for us than her at the mo!
