What's the 'reasonable' budget? How much space do you need? Is it for your entire collection or something 'for the weekend'? i.e. HDD or Solid state.
If you need 40GB iRiver HP140 is a goodun, as are the iPods although they cost more.

Worth doing a search as there's been plenty of others like this.
solid state (no moving parts) which account for all the smaller capacity devices. HDD (Hard disk) one which are essentially laptop type hard drives in a nice package with buttons and screens attached to them. However the HDD are bigger and heavier but obviously hold much more data. You can use most devices to transfer normal files (like you would a floppy disk etc.), some you just plug it in and it appears as a drive, some you need vendor provided software.
Sizewise they generally go like this (they also come in other sizes, prices are roughly ones, you can pay more and less - I'm sure others will recommend other prices)
ss - 128mb - about 2 albums - £50
ss - 256mb - about 4 albums - £80
ss - 512mb - about 8 albums - £110
ss - 4GB - about 48 albums - £150
hdd - 15GB - about 240 albums - £180
hdd - 20GB - about 320 albums - £200
hdd - 40GB - about 640 albums - £250
you can get iPod minis which are 4GB, normal iPods come in 20 and 40 GB sizes. IIRC For the price of a 20GB iPod you can get a 40GB iRiver (both around £240 I think)
Should give you a rough idea. The other thing to consider is features (radio, id3 tag support, treble/mid/bass controls etc., compatibility - what format is most your music in? (mp3, wma etc.?)

I like these, look well nice in the flesh.

More expensive than the ipod min but longer battery life and more capacity.
Probably cheaper places than pc world though
