Lane-hogs to finally get the message!
Check out http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/s...re/3730884.stm
Does this finally mean the end of the daily frustration of my Scooby being restricted to the performance of an asthmatic 1-litre Nissan Micra?
(Moderators: this is a huge source of frustration for us Scooby owners - please let this thread live on the General Forum for at least a while!)

I saw these last night on the M1 north of Meadowhall(J34)and actually cheered(sad I know). There was still the odd car pootling along obliviously in the middle lane(the signs don't include BMW's)but most seemed to be driving ok.

It's when they just sit in the middle lane and you have to go from slow to fast and then straight back to the slow lane again shaking your head in dismay. Perhaps they feel more secure with nothing in front of them and a completely empty lane either side??
Undertaking is illegal (unless congested and queues are simply moving at different rates) but oh so tempting in these cases, biggest fear of course is if the driver panics and moves into your lane as you draw near I was once undertaken when I was in the slow lane, some young prats in an XR2i if I remember correctly (the middle and fast lanes were clear, they were just being moronic).
Worst offenders?? Middle aged 30-40's ... I've seen grannies and students all doing it but the majority of offenders I've witnessed are middle aged MPV'ers (mums and dads) and Exec/Reps nattering on blue tooth headsets.
Please realise that it is OK to move into that two mile stretch of clear slow lane ... any time ... no rush

Like the stupid car last night that I was flashing at to move in, then when I went to move out into the o/side lane, found a car doing 100+ bearing down on me
Nearly had an accident - partly my fault I agree as I had been concentrating on the car in front & he was moving so fast I hadn't noticed him coming up from a previously clear M11 behind...
But in reality the twonk sat in the middle lane was to blame.
I reckon that people like that are driving without due care and attention & need prosecuting...

Mikk - " ..Middle aged 30-40's ... " Hmmm. You wouldn't be about 5 would you? You can't be any older as otherwise you wouldn't think that 30/40 is middle aged .... :-)
As for MLHs - most of them are either lazy or (somehow) think that there is a slow, medium and fast lane. Dunno where they get this impression from ...
(43 year old git) Dave .....

I am sceptical whether this scheme will have much of an effect. In my experience it is the occasions where you have a truck in lane 1 doing 56mph, another overtaking it in lane 2 at 57mph and a blue rinse overtaking both at 58mph that cause the tailbacks.
Technically they are all "legitimately" overtaking, it is just the length of time it takes to do so that causes the problems. You then inevitably get a queue of traffic behind the blue rinse in lane 3 waiting their "turn" to overtake. Now to my mind it doesn't make any difference to the capacity of the road whether the queue stays where they are in lane 3 or all move over into lane 1, the motorway has been reduced to 58mph maximum and the concertina effect propogates all the way back regardless.
More useful rules would be:-
1) Allow both undertaking/overtaking (the hoggers will soon learn that if they want to get off the motorway they are going to have to pull over!)
2) Get heavy on people pulling out in front of cars that are overtaking them if by doing so they force them to brake. (How annoying is it to be coming up to overtake when the blue rinse decides that them avoiding having to brake from 58mph to 57mph behind the truck is more important than you having to brake from 80mph to 58mph! )
3) Minimum speeds in lanes 2 and 3. If you are at the head of the queue not doing the minimum speed when it is safe to do so then you get done!!!!
