Best thing to do is to go down to your local Comet/Curry's etc, find a model you like and check out the prices...

Then do a search for the chosen model you like on here

http://www.dealtime.co.uk/

and probably save yourself 20% on high street prices

Also try makro wholesale places, if you know someone who has a card. Some silly bargains on tv's there.

If the tube has gone after 2 years, phone phillips and argue it, thats completely unacceptable. I work for a large, well known electrical manufacturer and I know for a fact, if a customer has a unit of say 2-3 years old (even though outside of warranty) and the tube goes there is no arguement - repair covered by the company.

Make sure you stand your ground on this one and you'll get it sorted.

ooo I've got a kaput 3year old Bush 32" Widescreen.
The picture has gone to a small strip in the middle. I thought the tube had gone and didn't think Bush would want to know! Comet certainly didn't.

The stores will generally never want to know because technically they've done as much as they're obliged. However, although obviously policy is going to differ from manufacturer to manufacturer, most companies don't want their name dragged through the mud so if you kick up enough of a fuss you'll probably get what you want - even just the manufacturer covering say the cost of the tube would be a reasonable gesture.

My Phillips 28" wide screen dolby pro's tube went after 2 years - To be fair it had been the subject of 4 house moves in that time!!
Replaced it with a similar spec Panasonic and its pure class - 18months ago this one was about £750 I guess similar spec ones now wont be more than £400...
Oh and this one's rented - No way was i prepapred to chance another tube going and wrangles with manufacturers etc...This way any problems they just replace it for fre - happy days... Martin Dawes rentals is where I went - some quality kit available...

Its is reasonable to expect a TV to last at least 4/5 yrs.
If yours fails after 2yrs then the TV sold to you was NOT fit for its purpose and as such the supplying company is liable to fix/replace/refund you, NOT the manufacturer.
If you get fobbed off by your retailer, get your solicitor to send them a letter (recorded delivery) giving them one last chance to sort it for you before you take them to the small claims court. 9 times out of 10 they will settle with you before court, if not, you WILL win in court, but will be warned that if you lose you will be liable for ALL costs. But you WILL NOT LOSE.
I have personal experience of this sort of thing, and so far the score is 6-0 to me
2 TV's, 1 washing machine, 1 microwave, 1 Laptop and 1 Stereo system.

Bob is spot on with regards to the responsibility of the retailer to rectify things as technically your contract of sale is with the retailer. However, rather than even go to the trouble of getting a solicitor involved, might be worth having a quick but firm pop at the manufacturer, might sort things quickly rather than have to go to much trouble.

But, as mentioned by bob, if all else fails put the wind up the retailer and they'll probably shift

I bought a Beko 28" widescreen telly from Tescos over two years ago for a mere £200 including free delivery and of course clubcard points.

Still working fine and at that money it's a bargain with reasonable quality.

Any other recommendations ?
Current JVC 21in telly playing upa bit so looking at 28in widescreen.
Is 100Hz noticably better than 50Hz ?

Loads of good deals at the mo : Philips PW6006 at £279 or less, MATSUI 28WN20 for £189, Sharp models for £250ish (do they still blow up : seen this reported a few times)
The Philips has top controls which is nice (out of reach of my daughter !)
apart from that I spotted a JVC AV28GT1 for £329 which has 3 scarts which is also a plus point.

Recommendations : say £300tops ?

My Bush 28" Widescreen from Asda is still going well after over 2 years of use. Good value I think! Hopefully it'll last until the prices & longevity of LCD/plasma move in the right direction.

My current 29" Sony was purchased at least 9 years ago - Mind you I think it might be on the way out (I wonder if Sony will replace the Tube if it's faulty ).

Not sure what current Sony's are like but you can bet I'll be buying one when I have to .

Your best bet, once you've found a model you like, is to take a trip over to Kelkoo - http://www.kelkoo.co.uk.

Found the Hitachi 28W430N (discontinued model) for £267 : a 100Hz tv.
Might go out and see if any shops have any special offers on later today.
