Anyone had any dodgy skiing/boarding related injuries?
As per title really.
Went skiing this afternoon and got a bit smart on the jumps; lost a ski and twisted my knee (got up and kept going through adrenaline then fell off the tow and decided to call it a day ). One lass broke her collar bone
Anyone had any dodgy injuries they care to share?

Hillend - it's an artificial ski slope in Edinburgh. It was the longest in Europe but there has been another built since, so it's the second now

It has a beer and burger tent

Not a big fan of the artificial dry ski slopes . . . it hurts too much when you take a fall !
Use the indoor slope at Xscape Castleford which is very good.
Handy for getting the practice in for when we move to our ski apartment house in Austria next May

My smart **** **** of a cousin went skiiing on his honeymoon. Thinks he knew everything.
Hopefully the pain of knackering his knee and the following operation brought home that he should listen to the instructor and not go straight on the "big slope".
I'm amazed his long suffering wife puts up with him - but that's a different topic

Personally nothing more than a couple of cracked ribs up at Glenshee when I fell on sheet ice near the top of the Tiger as a kid....
.... but
I sadly witnessed a guy getting a t-bar tow literally stuck in the side of his head as the tow recoiled and spun round the return station. He must of been within the 'no go' area and I've never seen so much blood covered snow

Ahhh The joys of skiing at Glenshee!
Used to go there as a kid with our local YMCA "Ski Club" Seen a few good crashes or as the youngsters call them "wipeouts" lol, but the best/worst depending on point of view I ever saw was a girl that was skiing with us. She got to the bottom of the "Butchers" (IIRC) and tiger tows where there were large ques waiting to go on the tows and was travelling so fast that due to the lack of space between the ques she couldnt get enuf of a turn to slow her down....... went straight into the back of a parked transit minibus! skis went under said bus and she skelped her face off the back doors, knocked her unconcious for a little while!
Classic

My father fell on an artificial slope and instinctively put his hands out. He badly sprained his thumb which, decades later, still gives him gip. If you fall on a dry slope hold your on to your poles and keep you thumbs in.
I've also seen a guy wipe out spectacularly on a dry slope and rip his jeans open - I didn't find out what happened to his leg, but there was a fair amount of blood.
I'm still in 2 minds whether dry slopes are actually much of a benefit to beginners.
Lastly, the only injury I've sustained whilst skiing involves Apres Ski and my liver.

I knocked myself out at Hillend snowboarding when I underspun a backside 540 (meaning I landed facing back up the slope!). That sucked because I woke up and didn't know how the hell I was up Hillend as I only remembered as far back as having my tea that evening.
Another time I went too big on the new jumps the built and landed a 720 on the flat with my weight through my front foot. I did some damage to the ball of my foot and it just wouldn't heal. In the end I took 3 months off to let it heal but then never went back My snowboarding gear now collects dust in my parents attic

Torn lateral ligaments at Aviemore in my right knee
Took a chunk out of my hip at Glenshee coming down the Tiger
Both on skis, gave up after the knee injury and now board, haven't had too many real injuries on the board but I gave the ligaments in my right ankle a little stretch last year in Banff when i totally messed up the landing from a big jump. Hate dryslope haven't been on one for years, seen too many injuries on them.

After deciding to shush the bottom of a black in the 3 valleys (it was VERY flat at the bottom and pushing is such a pain!) I caught an edge and slid about 200 yards on my face. Bit lots of snow but was fine. Trouble was the guy behind took evasive action and came a cropper as well. Broke his leg in 4 places (all between the ankle and knee). Lots of operations but he was back on the slopes two years later and back playing rugby.
Dave
PS: if you're ever going to break a leg on a ski slope make sure it's the 3 valleys - the hospital down the road is superb for sticking broken bones back together - 'cos they have so much practice ....

I smacked my head on a dry slope in Hemel.
It caused me to have a fit.
They thought I had epilepsy (sp)
And I got banned from driving for three months, while I had tests to prove that hitting my head hard, caused the fit and not the fit causing the hit!
Was gutted. I would never use a dry slope now.

I nearly ripped my little finger off on the articificial dendex stuff, whilst snowboarding - that hurt - a lot! Got my finger caught inside one the triangles, my body kept going, my hand did'nt. Took months to heal the muscles. It used to ache like a biatch.
I ALWAYS tape my fingers together now, but try to avoid dendex if possible, if you can snowboard on that ****, you can snowboard on anything!

How about a skateboarding injury?
This happened many years ago - 1978 (ish) and we wherte around 13/14
Some friends and i built a ramp for doing tricks and stuff
On lad who will remain nameless went up the ramp and off of the top.
His board landed on vertically point upwards.
He landed ontop of it with his legs open.
Now i know what you are thinking.
But no, not the 1st thought.
Fortunately a ******** got in the way and he split it on half (well, almost in two)
It took ages for the ambulance to arrive in which time he was in agony and screaming a fair bit. He was taken to casualty where he had it stitched back together or whatever they do to a split love plum.
He was laid up in bed for two weeks and moved around with great care for a month or so afterwards.
Still makes me wince and cross my legs even now.

Fooking hell!! That xray pic is giving me the heebie jeebies!!
Just been up to A&E this morning as I couldn't move when I woke up - have pulled a ligament in my left knee (the big one down the inside, apparently) so nothing serious Back to the slopes a week on Sunday
Kenny, if you are looking for a new home for your boarding gear at a reasonable price give me a ring
