That was a young lad who took his mums truck without permission so him and his girlfriend could have a day out.

Simple: The tunnel vision effect. Human condition when under stress/panicking.

Examples: Watch the nervous woman on the motorrway sitting 2 inches from the steering wheel completely engrossed in what is happening directly ahead, not of what its to either side or behind, or 5 cars ahead.

Another one:

Novice Karters: do the same when taking apexes and seem enraged when they collide with a better driver who was actually overtaking them on the racing line.
