Default Alternative to Bupa for minor surgery??

Hi all

I want to get a few moles removed, non nhs style. Bupa quoted me a shed load, like £1000 to remove 3 small moles, seems mental. Who else can I approach???????????

Scalpal and some good sense numbing drugs.

I'll do it for £500.

you want someone to cut into your body with a sharp knife then chuck bits of it away and repair to a standard where you will recover without problems......pay the man the £1k and stop moaning! (i'd tip him £100 on top to make sure he does tidy stiches!)

go tell GP the same...it may work!

(ps- my GP was keen but a butcher....it bled for 2 weeks and healed like a shark bite!)

I had mine done on the NHS as they were deemed at risk due to size, shape colour etc, I dodnt know how the private process works but i was in about 20 mins while they removed 2 moles,

anyone who has a camera phone and wants to see some gore, i have pics of both about 2 hours after the Op and it does scar

A little drastic cutting off your leg just because of a mole.

No wonder you wouldn't retrieve those tyres!

Hello

A friend of mine had it done in hospital and was completely butchered. She has two large scars: One on her back (about 1 inch) and another just above one breasts (about 0.5 inch).

So from what I can work out, the procedure for cutting out a mole is to just hack it around a bit with a scalpel.

Beware!

Steve.

You have to quick nowadays, I used to have hours to give a " witty " reply !

My story...

I went to my local GP to get advice on the removal of three moles on my neck and one on my face.

The small ones on my neck were annoying me when I had to wear a shirt and tie, these are small moles of about 2-3mm in Dia, they hang like a very small grape. The GP said he would cut them off in a special "Small surgical session" he does every Friday, no problem, no big deal.

The one on my face I was a little more worried about. It is about 8-10mm in Dia and it is bigger beneath the skin than it is above it. A bit like a pea beneath the skin on my jaw line. I often catch it when shaving, and it bleeds like ****.

After watching a programme on Skin Cancer and being a lover of the Sun, it was this mole that took me to my GP.

He said it probably wasnt a mole, it was more likely to be a cyst, and nothing to worry about.

He made me an appointment to see a Plastic Surgeon at our local hospital, to get the ball rolling for its removal.

I have since cancelled the meeting with the Plastic Surgeon, and didnt go ahead with the planned removal of the moles on my neck.

My Doctor said the neck moles can be removed at any time, and just to give him a weeks notice, the one on my face I am going to live with, I am happy that it is a safe mole/cyst whatever, so Im going to live with it.

The time between the Doctors appointment and the Plastic Surgeons was only 3 weeks, so dont believe the hype about having to wait for years to have them taken off.

I will still go ahead with the neck moles removal when Im ready.

If they're suspicious looking then the Gp should sort out a biopsy and if anything is untoward then you'll get em cut out / off on the NHS - if not then its deemed cosmetic so either you pay or live with them, simple as.

Get on to your local trust's website, and find the doctors with an interest in dermatology. Phone his hospital and ask for the number of the doctor's secretary for private work. Phone her up and arrange the consulation through her - she'll tell you the costs involved.

A standard 1-day operation costs approx £1000-£1500. That covers all the expenses asscoiated with a one day stay in a Hospital.

Ask your Doc to refer you to some other private hospitals and get a few other quotes.

I went through BMI Healthcare who run the Ross Hall hospitals. It was a sports injury for me so I've no idea if they do the op you're looking at. Cost me £1495, but I didn't have a 10mth NHS wait - 12 days from 1st appointment to the actual op.

My Consultant also does work for the NHS, so it only worked out for me because I didn't want to wait.

£1k does about right though - should be more like £800

Initial consultation £100-150 (poss £200 if in London) £150
Surgeons fee for minor op x3 (£250 + 50%) £375 -

If local anaesthetic then £90ish for that

Plus room fees / surgical items etc - £300ish

I agree, except a grand seems outragous to me. A GP should be able to do a good enough job, especially if they are small moles.

How much?!? Shouldn't take more than a vial of lidocaine! If you are going to pay that much then I'll sell you some for £80!
