Default 300 miles of new road to be built in Scotland

Reposted from ABD notice:

Environmental groups Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth in association with the Labour Government and big business are to embark upon a massive road building scheme which will construct an estimated 300 miles of road on a Scottish Island which currently boasts about 100 miles of road. The project, which is to take at least 3 years, will require 750 lorry loads of stone per day and will result in almost total destruction of an important and delicate ecologically sensitive area.
Environmental groups and politicians think the road building scheme, which is to enable access to 500 wind turbines each 443 feet in height, is a fantastic idea and that it will be excellent for the environment. They are keen to see that smelly bog land drained and turned into the largest power station on earth as there could be all sorts of nasty bugs living out there that could be of use to terrorists. The scheme has the added advantage that none of the politicians and environmentalists, who traditionally live in large cities in the south of England, can see the turbines from their houses and the population of the island is low and is mostly comprised of people who don't really matter anyhow. The small technical problem that the wind doesn't always blow at a speed suitable for electricity generation and, therefore, that coal or oil power stations have to be kept running at all times on standby is no longer an issue we are assured. That "green" organisations want fossil fuel power stations to run even when not producing electricity can only bode well for future requests to construct more of these installations.

Motorist's organisations are already over the moon about the change in direction and tactics on the part of the "green" organisations who have, in the past, automatically opposed road building. Motorists hope that the plans for the Isle of Lewis will be extended to other parts of the country and that they can look forward to a massive increase in road infrastructure, in a very short timescale, with the full support of the greens and the Labour Government and a commitment to totally ignore the wishes of the local population because they don't matter. Motorists are also hopeful that local councillors and politicians will show the same enthusiasm as those on the Isle of Lewis where despite 88% of the people who elected them being opposed to the development the planning application took only 60 seconds to be approved by the council. While many in the local population have their suspicions about how this took place they are sure that there is nothing underhand going on and that no one is gaining any illegal benefit from the situation.

So, there you go folks, seems that there is absolutely no problem at all increasing the road infrastructure in one of the most delicate ecosystems on earth by 300% providing you can pretend that it is for the good of the environment. Prof. David Bellamy in a meeting on 2nd September described his fight against this wind factory as the most important fight of his life. You can check out a few photos of the area to be destroyed here:

This will, of course, be a private 300 miles of road so you and I will not be using it. Perhaps we should run a Scoobynet competition to vote for where 300 miles of public road could be most useful? I am sure we will get no shortage of suggestions, all of which will be opposed by the "greens" and the government.

Another example of how the government can bully their harebrained schemes into becoming reality without having any understanding of the true impact it will have. No doubt they will regard the finished product as a long lasting monument to themselves.

I'm just amazed they managed to get Terrorists mentioned in the same press release as a Wind Turbine farm...

It wasn't actually a press release, it was a tongue in cheek posting which explains the mention of terrorists. Almost every mad government plan these days, specially in the US, seems to manage to mention the terrorist threat somewhere :-)

Sadly the actual content is factual. You can't build badly needed roads in population centres because the "greens" object and yet you can destroy a whole Scottish island with a unique and delicate ecosystem and the "greens" support it. Of course you can't see this island from the centre of any large city so I imagine most "greens" are unaware that it exists.
