Default Unsolicited phone calls

I get really p1ssed of by double glazing companies 'doing a survey in my area' and ringing me to tell me but I can sort of cope when its an actual human calling but now its f*cking recordings by 'media telecom limited' telling me I have won 10 grand, a holiday in the bahamas or a Plasma Telly, I would have thought that if I had won something as valuable they could at least dignify me with a phone call themselves.

I have tried to register for the Telephone Preference service but their server is giving me an Apache error so is prob knackered.

I really take offence to this, my Sunday being interupted by phone Spam, who the f*ck do they think they are ?

TPS does work once you are able to register but takes some time to take effect.

You can fax them on 020 7323 4226.

I registered on the TPS and the calls virtually stopped overnight.I did get one from BT the other day though and when I pointed out that I'd registered and they shouldn't be calling me they quickly put the phone down.
BTW-apache error means the site search injun' is down.

I never answer calls to my land line or mobile if they don't have caller display. Even when it's someone I know calling from an unknown number, sometimes it pays to not take the call at let them leave a message...

I heard another trick was to let the phone ring a bit longer - apparently it's all automated, it dials several numbers at once, you must be the first to pick up.

I had that ages ago but lost it. The first time I heard it I felt sorry for the BT bloke, it was a bit of a major over reaction by the customer. But even after the bloke shouts at him the BT chap still says 'its only going to take a minute of your time'. Cant see why he hadnt go the message by then!

After that point I thought he got what he deserved. Bloody funny though.

My brother has that on his home phone - means I can't call him from the office as our number is always withheld...

I did that for a while, it's called 'anonymous call rejection'. The caller apparently gets a message saying this number doesn't accept withheld numbers.

You have to pay for it which i didn't mind until one day when MBNA credit cards called me and got through even though the number was witheld!?

"hi, we're calling about your account"

"f*ck off, i don't have an account with you and i'm registered with TPS - don't call here again".

I called BT to give them a b0ll0cking and the bird on the end said something along the lines of "they couldn't guarantee to screen all withheld number calls"

"so what exactly am i paying nearly £10 a quarter for then??"

Theres a code you can type before you dial that gives the number out just for that call. Should be listed somewhere on the bt site I would think.

sounds like my dad! He often reacts like that. I'm not joking though, we have two phone lines in our house, and we must have at least 10 phone calls a day from various people! (not including friends )...tell me more about this TPS thing? does it block all numbers except those that you allow (similar to email spam blockers), or does it just block the bum's that want to **** you off?

Many Thanks,

Matt

Does registering with the TPS stop idiots calling you after you've registered even though they had your number before?
Some company keeps calling my grandparents and then hanging up once they get to the phone. Bearing in mind, they're both in their 80s its getting past a joke. On the odd occaison they have got to the phone its been a stupid cold call. I've registered them with the TPS now but will this now stop as their phone no is possibly already on a database?
If it doesn't stop, I'm going to report it to BT as a nuisance call and have a trace put on the line - is this still possible??

TPS doesn't "block" anything. It provides phone sales companies with a list of numbers that are registered with TPS. They ignore this at their peril and TPS take action against them if they abuse the system. I am registered and still get a few calls. If they really annoy me and say something like "TPS - yeah but we don't care about them" then I report them by fax. Small charities seem unaware of TPS but I don't report them cos' I think they deserve a break in most instances. DL

Hello

Repuatable companies have to run their mailing (telephone) lists through TPS. If your name / number appears on that list they are supposed to remove you. If they do not, then they face a fine of £5000 per call.

I had someone ring me, was polite, took all their details and then complained that I was registered with TPS, they just hung up. I filled in a form on the TPS website and they sent me a letter saying they would investigate.

A couple of months after joining, I hardly get any cold calls at all.

Steve.

Thumbs up

TPS for me - I registered with them about 6 months ago and the number of junk calls we get now is negligible.

Anyone know how to turn off "free missed call alerts" from orange? ffs - if they can't be bothered to leave a message then i can't be bothered to phone them back.

We have TPS and it works most times but my tip for the one's that get through is to ask what I'm getting for my time on the phone answering their questions - I say 'well you're getting paid to ask me questions and my answers are being used to make companies money' so what are you giving me then - this usually ends the call pretty quickly without it getting nasty

Scoobabe, yes it does stop that. And from what you've said it sounds like a method companies use to get an idea of what hours the house is occupied, it rings just to see if anyone is home. THey then sell this information to marketing bods who use it to more effectively time their calls. PITA, but TPS sorted me out too.

I work in the Data/Direct Marketing industry and I'm registered with TPS!

If they call up, play along, ask for the company name and their name, then tell them you are registered with TPS and you will report them. They normally hang up as they can potentially face a fine for calling you.

Bear in mind it can take up to 8 weeks to filter down to stop junk (sorry.. stragetically targeted mailings) mail.
